I agree that we will never be able to read and fully understand literature that is written from a different culture and time period. There were so many things that I did not understand in all three stories that were meant directly for someone of that culture to understand. Without the footnotes, I would have been completely confused about the context of the story. For example in the story The Winnebago Trickster Cycle, I did not know that it was unacceptable in the Winnebego culture for a woman to court a man for marriage, as well as, eat in a ravenous and greedy fashion. This story is using the Trickster to explain to those listening, what behavior not to partake of and what kind of behavior is seen as unacceptable in their culture. This is
Although it is just like any other book, in that its successfulness will be judged by sales as well as how it affects readers, the author only went through all of the research done in writing this book in order to quench his own thirst for finding out where his roots lay. This is quite evident in the reading, which seems to mention the history, and story behind nearly everyone, as well as every place. This makes for many interesting stories, but often-times ones that are too preoccupied with showing the reader what it meant to the author, and not as concerned with the enjoyment of the reader.
Nearly every person alive has felt the struggle of not having enough money and worrying about fitting into to a higher society. The short story written by Graham Greene, “The Destructors”, demonstrates the difference between classes of society. The short story written by D.H. Lawrence, “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, demonstrates the anxiety over money in poor family. Both of these two short stories appeal to the common man by presenting a universal theme. The theme of both “The Destructors” by Graham Greene and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence is the struggle between class and wealth however difference in character and setting drive the two stories apart.
Also, in addition to examples of traditional knowledge, I also enjoyed the oral traditional that was clearly described and articulated in the book. I rarely get the opportunity to hear elder stories that aren’t in either a video or a passing comment in a notebook. For me reading out oral tradition was a point of connection to the book, it reminded me about how colorful, conscious, evolved and impactful elder stories can be. One of my favourite readings was the story from Kitty Smith, The Stolen Women (Cruikshank, 2005). The story from Kitty Smith speaks to the transition young women go through from child to marriageable age. The former story as described by author signifies abrupt social adjustment. I think this story eludes to the many changes women undergo to continue on in their journey in society. As a young woman, a strong female voice was something that drew me to some of the stories in the text. The three main women that served as references to the indigenous stories told stories of human life cycles, encounters with the pale men (colonizer) and travelling amongst the
The story “ The Cask of Amontillado” provides various amounts of moods as they walk through the catacomb. In Edgar Allan Poe’s story, the main character known as Montresor, goes through creepy situations and events with the intoxicated, Fortunato. As this story goes on talking about them walking through the catacomb, there’s at most four moods created throughout the story. Those consists of eerie, suspenseful, scary, and dramatic. These moods are to be spoken about when Montresor does something awful to his acquaintant, Fortunato.
Individual cultures can be seen through similar threads showcasing each unique group of people. Through the stories, similarities of the German version in these cultures are evident through the details in which our heroin lives. I will be introducing you the topic of differences between two stories between Aschenputtel and Cinderella. Aschenputtel is a maid that lives with her stepsisters and her step mother. One day she wished to go to the ball along with her stepsisters and stepmother, but stepmother told her to pick up lents in the ashes. Aschenputtel sang out to the birds to help her out, she went under a hazel tree and singed a song to make her have good clothes to go. In the end she was happily married, but the stepsisters got their eyes pecked out. In Cinderella, she is as well a maid who has to live with her wicked stepsisters. One day a the family got an invite to join the ball that is at the palace. The stepsisters and stepmother told Cinderella that she could not attend, there Cinderella cried. She then had a godmother appear before her and gave her a beautiful dress and glass shoes. She met the prince and soon they got married and the stepsisters lived in the castle with her. The comparisons of similarities among cultures show that although many of us come from different places, we can all connect in one way or another. These similarities show unity while out differences show or uniqueness. Through the stories,
“The Rocking Horse Winner” is a short story written by D.H Lawrence that follows the short and tragic life of a boy named Paul, who assumes he has amazing luck after realizing he can predict racehorse winners by furiously riding his rocking horse until he reaches a trance-like state. Unfortunately, as his family takes advantage of his gift and starts gaining more money, Paul’s luck begins to kill him. Literally. Throughout the story, there are several themes evident, such as wealth, life, conscious, existence; luck, family, and greed. The conflicts displayed are man vs man, man vs self, and man vs. society. The rocking horse has become an obsession for paul and the potential benefits it would have on his family, ultimately not knowing the actual harm it will cause.
the coyote relies on his own wits. The coyote is always looking for the short
In “The Rocking-Horse Winner” we are introduced to a woman who author D.H Lawrence states, “was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck. She married for love, and the love turned to dust. She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them.” When I dive into the psychology behind that statement, I come up with a thought that this beginning draws similarities to Lawrence’s own upbringing with his coal miner father and schoolteacher mother. Similarly the mother in “The Rocking-Horse Winner” is disenchanted with her marriage and the way her life
Nevertheless, Orenstein’s conclusions are of less help than those of Darnton when it comes to understanding specific details and recurring motifs throughout the “global sisterhood of oral tales”
The Rocking Horse Winner, by D.H. Lawrence, is an informative story about luck and one's own fortune. In this story, Lawrence attempts to illustrate how one can guide one's own fate, instead of allowing things to happen by chance. He believes that the only person that affects what happens to someone, is really that person himself. "Everything is what you make of it," is Lawrence's message to the reader. By his use of characterization, instructional images, and irony in The Rocking Horse Winner, D.H. Lawrence attempts to convey to the reader that success and luck are not something that one simply waits for to arrive, but things that one must works to achieve.
The Krebs cycle is a series of reactions which occur in the mitochondria and results in the formation of ATP and other molecules which undergo farther reactions to form more ATP. Cellular respiration can be divided into four sequences. The first sequence is glycolysis, its breaks down one molecule glucose into two molecules pyruyate. Transition takes place in the matrix of the mitochondria and it’s referred to the beginning of aerobic respiration. The process takes place if there is enough amounts of oxygen in the mitochondria. However if there is insufficient oxygen in the mitochondria it could result into fermentation. Transition Reactions take place in the pyruvate molecule. In transition reactions two hydrogen electrons and one carbon
When a person is lucky, it does not have to mean that they are fortunate with money. Luck is the chance for things to go the way you want them to go with out having any control over the situation. In The Rocking Horse Winner, Hester, the mother seems to believe that luck is strictly having money, and when there is no money, there is no luck. Hester's idea of luck meaning money brings forth the two ideas of greed and death throughout the story.
Archetypes are used in literature to portray a certain meaning, that helps create a better and more meaningful story. The archetypes used can be embedded in the characters, symbols, or even rituals involved in a story. These archetypes can help give deeper meaning to the story by giving a underlying reference to concepts that are used over and over again in literature throughout history. When an author uses an archetype in his or her writing, they link it to many other stories that use that same archetype. Some do this for a reason, to give an underlying meaning, to symbolized something of importance, or even just to make their story more interesting. Many readers may not notice the underlying archetype, but sometimes the author uses them because he or she knows that the reader will.
The company I have chosen to create a scenario for is Preferred Meals. Preferred Meals is a food vendor, under the Elior Company, that supplies facilities with food products. The company caters for a wide range of clients like Airlines, Child Care Facilities, Adult Care Facilities, and Schools. They operate out of three USDA inspected production facilities in New York, Pennsylvania, and their home office is in Illinois. The company has plans to break ground on two new production sites in California and Texas. Preferred Meals is also a Food Service Management Company, meaning they provide a full contracted food service operation:
The industry of cell phone is one of the greatest growing industries in the globe and has internationally expanded swiftly as rising states emerge. The global industry of cell phone is greatly definite by total market share and the supported price upon the type of product.
