The McCarthy era is remembered as the time of the Red Scare. “Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party” essentially echoed throughout the halls of the American government. It was a media exploitative witch hunt; mass paranoia hovered over the population like a plague. The headline-grabbing quest to sift out Communists from the population served a purpose much greater than national security--it was to construct a narrative. Everyone was a suspect, so the inexorable name of the game was absolute conformity.
