The movie, The Wood, directed by Rick Famuyiwa is about three friends who are transitioning into adulthood. The plot is a bout three friends who met in Middle school in Inglewood, CA and one of them, Roland goes missing on his wedding day. Mike and Slim go out to find him and the reason why is not at the weeding. To their surprise they find him completely drunk and trying to avoid getting married as he was fearing the unknown of marriage, he was afraid of losing his friends, the fun times, and to commit into a formal relation. I highly recommend this movie as it shows the importance of friendship, the common stressors young adults face while transition and the importance of social support. In The Woods the biological development of the characters is fully portrayed as it reflects the physical changes they experience from the body shape, girls show more developed breast, and growth spurts. In addition, Mike’s personality took a drastic turn when he moved from North Carolina to California, he was acting different to fit in, and he became more sociable and open to new peers and relationships. …show more content…
Even though the police intervened once, it shows that even minor incidents put minorities at higher risk of facing criminal charges. Young adults are starting to wonder the impact they in their communities, as example of this is Stacey, Alicia’s brother, who not only play the role of a violent person, but at the same time he is taking the role of a father when trying to protect his sister, he also demonstrated how young adults can twist a negative relationship into a more healthy one (when he recognizes to Mike his mistake and apologize for his behavior prior to the dance night). This behavior also demonstrates psychological
The speaker is confrontered with her own short doings and is forced to the realization that she has killed a boy in her ally by not putting a stop to his poor choices with what im assuming is gangs.
In more specific terms, the theme regarding strife is defined by the various hardships these teenagers presently encounter such as race, crime, education, family issues, and poverty, all of which can be related to our class lectures. Firstly, race is a basic component in the strife that these teenagers experience. In Canada, those who are black are considered to be part of a minority group. Thus, they are usually at a disadvantage in a mostly white society. An example of this is found in the documentary, where the boys mention that they have been stopped by police for no
The movie “Crash”, by Director and Writer Paul Haggis, follows 8 ethnically diverse families/ individuals facing the struggle of modern day racism and stereotypes created and faced in modern Los Angeles, California. These individuals take the roles of individuals living their daily lives within Los Angeles, California while facing stereotypes. The cast portrays: 2 caucasian white male police officers, an African American director and his wife, a white district attorney and his wife, a Persian immigrant family, and a Hispanic father whose occupation is a locksmith. The scene chosen from this film involves the police officers (Officer Ryan and Officer Hanson) pulling over the African American Director (Cameron Thayer) and his wife (Christine Thayer) at a traffic stop. This scene establishes two different types of theoretic sociological concepts of Thomas Theorem and cognitive dissonance.
It demonstrates that even without juridical discrimination; hate speech, lowered expectations, and dismissive behavior can have devastating effects on achievement. Black members of the blue-eyed group forcefully remind whites that they undergo similar stresses, not just for a few hours in a controlled experiment, but every day of their lives. Although these concepts are food for thought… they are merely preludes to the main course. The most important lesson to be learned here is that just one person can make a difference. Next we join a group of 40 teachers, police, school administrators and social workers in Kansas City - blacks, Hispanics, whites, women and men.
She has one friend named Stacy that knows everything about Nicole, they are best friends until one day Stacy is shot in a drive by and is killed. Nicole’s story is an example of marriage and family, poverty, and crime. Like Lisa, Nicole does not have parents that support their family or treat them right. Nicole’s step-dad is an alcoholic and abusive towards her. She is to the point where she has to lie to her teacher about her bruises so she does not get taken away. She feels like she is all alone and nowhere to go that is safe for her, not even school. Also, when her only friend Stacy dies in a drive-by, this is an example of high crime rates in poverty neighborhoods. In class, we talked about how there tends to be more crimes in the less wealthy neighborhood versus the wealthier neighborhoods. The kids that grow up in these very poor neighborhoods, tend to turn to criminal behavior because that is all they know. They have grown up around it their whole lives, and they have become accustomed to it. So maybe a drive by or gunshots in Nicole’s neighborhood are common for her and she does not even phase when she hears a gun shot.
October 13, 2006 seemed like it would be like any other day for Arlena Lindley. Her friend had come to visit her but when her three year old son, Titches, soiled his pants, the day took a turn for the worst. It was on that fateful day that Lindley’s then boyfriend, Alonzo Turner, beat her toddler with a leather belt, threw him against the wall and then proceeded to wipe the boy’s face in his cereal. Turner would continue to abuse the boy, going as far as pushing the young boy’s face into the toilet. Lindley tried grabbing her son and running, yet her efforts were to no avail. Turner snatched the toddler from her hands and proceeded to lock Lindley and her friend out of the house. By the time the two reentered, Titches had stopped breathing;

* Empathy for African American children and their parents who have to enforce the unfair rules (para 4): “his father or mother slaps him and drags him to the back of the bus”
Fruitvale Station, a movie based on a real story in Northern California, depicts the life of 22-year-old Oscar Grant. Oscar was a compassionate father who accomplished whatever he could to provide for his daughter, but unfortunately was killed by a police officer at the train station on New Year’s Eve. The film does a good job on displaying how family oriented Oscar was despite his impoverished background. The problem is this movie precipitates hatred between minorities and law enforcement. Especially since the release of the movie was only months after the murder of Trayvon Martin. Entertainment is another form of media that influences our emotions, opinions, and logical thinking. If we are not vigilant about what we consume, all Americans will lack to understand different
The route the children are designated to take, in addition, is specified in the writing to inspire in the audience fear. The segregated school for Black students is located within a mass of railroad tracks, warehouses, and red-light districts, all notably dangerous locations for children to be in. By specifically mentioning that Ellison had “forbidden words” added to his vocabulary, he implies that he had interacted with the many unsavory individuals in the area to the extent of learning immoral materials or skills (Ellison 4433). This emotional appeal enforces the idea that impressionable children are innocent and that their actions were forced upon them by the adults in control. It also appeals to the parental instinct to protect children and preserve their future. By being forced to maintain continuous exposure to dangerous environments and professions of ambiguous morality, the Black children are victims of tarnishing and possible injury by the White authority purposefully segregating the children to hazardous areas. The strategy in specifying the unfortunate circumstances the African American children are facing is for causing the White adults to appear as villains who impose professionals of socially denigrated on innocent children. In contrast, Ellison, despite not doing anything particularly virtuous, is designated the ‘hero’ to be cheered for along with all his associates and peers, who are also victims.
Sixteen year old African-American teen Rashad was expecting he could walk into a local gas station, buy a bag of chips, and walk out. What he was not expecting was to be wrongly accused of stealing, beaten by police, and hospitalized. Quinn, a white teenager, sees it all play out, and notices that the cop is actually his friend’s brother, who took care of him ever since he was little. Now Quinn can’t decide if he should keep quiet to save his relationship with his
Into the Woods follows a baker and his wife who have a desire to have children and start a family. They soon learn that their inability to have children is a curse brought upon by a witch. Meanwhile, characters from different fairytales have other personal goals they want to achieve as well. Through certain circumstances, each respective character gets their wishes granted and lived happily ever after, only for consequences to occur afterwards. The story is set in a setting similar to the Middle-Ages, with kingdoms, farmers and a world filled with magic. The story is another fairytale that brings a number of fairytales together and brings in different worlds to merge into one to tell one unique story.
From the beginning of the story, we are shown racial inequalities. Ellison introduces us to our character who is a broke and hungry African American economically struggling to save his lady friend’s, Laura’s, life. The protagonist “got no birth certificate to
3. The first identified population is the black youth in the neighborhood. One of the reasons for their high risk factor is the role models shown in the film. At the basketball court, during the scene when the young black male shows his "mentor," where Daniel is pointed out as "the one" who is slated to be shot, the victimization of the impressionable youth is apparent. If my "hero" is talking about "he ain't nothing," then for sure that is where my mind is going to be. By not having role models that portrayed societal norms, these youths are placed at risk If no one I know behaves in a manner that conforms with society, how can I be expected to understand what society expects. In the bathroom scene, when Daniel stands up to the three black youths, and tells the beaten white youth he has to stand up for himself, he is a marked man.
Fruitvale Station is a movie that has the capability to bring many emotions to the surface. This movie can foster critical thinking, but it can also draw the viewer in to experience the raw emotions and suspenseful moments of this real life story. Unfortunately, Oscar Grant’s life was ended abruptly after he spent the night celebrating the New Year with his friends and girlfriend, Sophina. From this story, it is clear that Oscar was attempting to change his story by being a better father to his daughter, Tatiana, thinking about marrying Sophina, and better providing for his family by getting a stable job and being a man that his mother and sister could rely upon. While the incident that occurred at Fruitvale Station could be analyzed from any variety of theories, this paper will examine these events from the lens of Conflict Theory and Social Learning Theory. These theories intertwine in many ways, but they also differ from each other in very important aspects. Fruitvale Station is a cinema depiction of a true story involving the death of Oscar Grant in a train station in Oakland, California during the early morning hours of January 1, 2009. This incident has sparked many civil rights related protests and discussions. Oscar Grant was survived by his mother, who has been very vocal since the incident, fighting for equal rights for minorities, his sister, and his daughter, Tatiana (Johnson).
