Benjamin Franklin born on January 17th, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts Bay, British America and died on April 17, 1790 at the aged of 84 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America. This great man was one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. He was author, politician, freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. A lesser-known fact is he was the grandfather of the American fire service.
Franklin is considered by many to the father of the American Fire Service because he was a volunteer fireman and on December 7th, 1736, Franklin created the Union Fire Company. A group of 30 men with leather buckets, strong bags, and baskets (used to transport items). The men of the Union Fire Company met every month to talk about fire prevention and fire fighting methods. He suggested many ways to prevent fires. Franklin used his newspaper the Pennsylvania Gazette to spread fire preventive measures. Franklin wrote that everyone should remove the wooden moldings from the sides of the fireplace, to clean the fireplace chimneys on a regular basis and because many fires began when bed warmers which was not kept closed as hot embers would fall out when it was being moved around the house to keep the bed warmers, Franklin recommend they be kept closed tight when filled with hot coals. Franklin even looked to fines chimney sweeps that did not properly clean a chimney, which might result in a fire due to the carelessness of the chimney sweep.

Having been born in the first month of the year 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin has been regarded an iconic figure not only in the history of America but as well as the world.1 Although he had a deep passion for reading, he could only manage to attend school for two years. He then joined his brother at the age of 12 in apprenticeship at a shop. At the age of 15 people were reading his very first newspaper in Boston. It is after his letters had become a hit that he declared to be the writer. His brother, James, got furious about his writing so he had to run away to Philadelphia at the age of 17. His love for experiments could be seen at an early age for he carried out an experiment on kites during a lighting storm. This one was in regards to lighting and power. Franklin was a famous politician as well as a civil activist during the Enlightenment Era that took place in North America. He was widely known as he played his role as the Ambassador to France and the effort he made to acquire French military assistance when the American Revolution was ongoing. Among other achievements, Benjamin was among the Founding Fathers that put their signatures for the Declaration of Independence besides helping in the drafting of the United States Constitution. Besides being approachable and self-effacing, Benjamin Franklin was an extremely brilliant person.2 he was first a businessman as well as a scientist although he later got involved in civics and politics.
The fire service has long-standing traditions dating back to the 18th Century, whether it is the color red on fire apparatus or the shape of their helmets. Some traditions are important in the American fire service while others traditions are dangerous or unneeded practices but still, exist for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest challenges to making changes requires the changing of the culture within the fire service.
This commission helped usher in much needed changes on the labor side, which after a few years developed into the New York State Department of Labor (aflcio.org, 2017). The fire also helped fire departments not only in New York City, but all over the Nation at that time, make changes to how they operate. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which was founded in eighteen ninety-six, declared at its annual meeting right after the fire, to all departments nation-wide, how important fire-drills were to life safety (Teague & Farr, 2009). A few years later the NFPA formed the Committee on Safety to Life to help with fire codes, regulations and departments. Several years after its development, they adopted revised specifications to fire escapes, and worked on specific regulations to exits to buildings and the Building Exit Codes (Teague & Farr, 2009). All of their work helped bring items like fire drills, egress from buildings, sprinklers, fire escapes, and other building code changes. Fire Departments all over the Nation were also helped and their eagerness to improve and update their equipment to meet the needs of a changing, and more industrialized and upward-bound Nation took full effect. The first cavalry of wildland firefighters began in August 1886 led by Captain Moses Harris from Troop M. When he took command of the group at Yellowstone National Park, their job was to manage and protect the park.The cavalry remained there for the next 32 years. Quickly after the group's arrival, they immediately began fighting wildfires all around the park. Here emerged the first group of wildland firefighters to be paid for their service. Workers began to apply new regulations, including campfire restrictions when deemed absolutely necessary. On April 15, 1860: Thomas S. Smart, Joseph Perkins, William T. Wright, Sam & William Handy, and Joseph Dunkley arrived in Franklin.
