Which word captures the essence of the United States? The country, since its birth in late 18th century, has often been referred as a nation of immigrants, opportunities, and freedom. In modern U.S. society, however, those lofty words are being replaced by one word: crime. In FBI’s 2012 Crime in United States report, the violent crime rate marked 26.1 per 1,000 U.S. residents, which is the highest in the world. Among the crimes, child abuse is rising as a serious social problem in America. The U.S. has one of the worst records of child abuse among industrialized nations. Every year, 6 million or more children suffer from child abuse—losing about seven children per day. In order to deter such horrid consequences, social service agencies and …show more content…
Their adeptness and discipline in multiple systems help direct team efforts more efficiently. Other than coordination, social workers serve as a “liaison to families and outside agencies, [provide] psychosocial assessment, and ongoing family support” (Van Pelt 26). Social workers have proficiency in approaching the family and children and talking with them. The communication is extremely important in the process of diagnosis and treatment of child abuse cases. The ability of social workers’ to interact with victims and families is therefore a huge help for the team. In fact, physicians heavily rely on their expertise in family interaction, for the physicians “don’t always have enough time to build trust with families” (Van Pelt 26). Social workers thus fill up the deficiency of the team with their ability in communication. Considering the trust between agencies and victims is essential to handle cases, the communicating role of social workers is vital to deal with problems. In addition to this, social workers “field calls from outside entities, arrange visits from child welfare and law enforcement, interface with citywide and countywide child abuse programs, and coordinate with prosecuting attorneys” (Van Pelt 26). The hospital-based teams have limitations to handle child abuse crimes. Although they can provide physical or psychological treatments to the victimized children and help recover the deteriorated relationships between
In today’s society more and more children are experiencing the brokenness that comes alongside living in an abusive home. Child abuse has progressively become a widespread problem in the United States. Every day approximately five children die at the hands of an abuser, and every year more than three million reports of child abuse are made (Eads 2). The government has a system to assist those suffering from abuse, but with all the lacking factors, one wonders what beneficial help these children are receiving. As the numbers of children becoming victims of abuse are increasing, the valuable aspects of the child protection system are decreasing. Abuse and neglect are serious issues and impact children’s lives forever. The child protection system
The subject of child abuse, in its various forms, is one of the most influential aspects of a child’s growth and development within society. The effects of being violated as a child, either emotionally, physically, verbally, or sexually, causes a monumental amount of lasting psychological and physiological, damage. Social disorders, behavioral problems, mental illnesses, learning deficiencies, and other dysfunctional problems can exist within a victim of child abuse, at any point in their lifetime. Despite the ladder, the issue of child abuse and Child Protective Services is almost never incorporated into our education system. Childcare and education professionals hold a myriad of responsibilities when working with children, and recognizing signs of abuse is merely one of them. However, too many children suffering from abuse are slipping through the cracks of mandated reporters. Communities and their school systems must formulate more efficient measures to combat and recognize abuse by spreading awareness and promoting abuse education.
Child Protective Services (CPS) is a complex system of assessments, investigations, and conclusions. CPS is the central agency in each communities child abuse and neglect service system. It is responsible for ensuring that preventative, investigative, and treatment services are available to children and families endangered by child abuse and neglect. As a result, CPS workers must perform a variety of functions when responding to situations of child maltreatment and play a variety of roles throughout their involvement with child protective clients. Reporting a suspective case of child maltreatment to the local CPS agency (or a family member’s own request for help with the problem) initiates
My field placement will be at Child protective services in El Paso TX. The department of child Protective Services withholds a wide range of services and responsibilities that include, investigating reports of abuse and neglect of children, provide services to children and families in their homes, providing services to help youth in foster care successfully transition to adulthood and helping children find adoption. There are many subdivisions within the department itself which offers different amenities during an open case with CPS, although these services solely justify the department, there is a unit known as Family Based Services or also FBSS which focuses on resources that will strengthen the family’s privation in order to ensure child safety and wellbeing. The Department predominantly benefits from task groups rather than treatment groups, because the department is on deadlines with each individual case, a treatment group would not benefit for the departments ultimate value which is Family Reunification. If the department is involved with a family for too long this may cause emotional distress on the children as well as the family. Every year in the United States, more than one out of every hundred children are victims of substantiated child abuse and neglect. For instance, in 2006, 3.6 million cases of child maltreatment were investigated, which is a rate of 47.8 per 1,000 children. In that year, nearly 1 million maltreatment claims were substantiated
Their occupation is based upon advocacy and social justice. In addition to this, it is crucial for the social worker to know everything about child abuse. This ranges from the signs and symptoms of it, to knowing how to react to these situations based on medical and psychological impact. The social workers at Wynona’s House must be resilient and patient. Having these qualities makes room for effective procedures because the psychosocial examinations usually last up to 2 and a half hours. More than one examination occurs each day. Lastly, social workers here must be committed to their work to fully lend a helping

Unfortunately that excludes children who 's incidents of child abuse are unreported and undetected. Child abuse can be defined differently from state to state, but commonly presents in the form of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, neglect and abandonment. The focus of this review is physical abuse, which is defined as non-accidental physical injury, from bruising to fractures to the most serious cases of abuse ending in death (Sink, Hyman, Matheny, Georgopoulos & Kleinman, 2010).
When a child is physically beaten or sexually abused, the ideal set of eventsis that doctors treat the injuries, therapists counsel the child, social services works with the family, police arrest the offender, and attorneys prosecute the case. To promote this response, effective community interventioninvolves the formation of a child protection team that includes professionals from medicine, criminal justice, social work, and educationwhounderstandandappreciate the different roles, responsibilities, strengths,
Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving more than 6 million children. The amount of children abused is doubled due to the fact that a single report can include multiple children. The U.S has one of the worst records among industrialized nations, losing an average between four and seven children everyday to abuse and neglect. The sociological theories that can be used to research the issue of child abuse in the US are symbolic interactionism and the conflict theory.
The article Familiar Subjects? Child abuse, a very sensitive yet susceptible issue. Many people do not want to face the consequences that child abuse can impose in children’s futures. The way a child is raised plays a very important role in how the child is going to grow up to be. More than likely if a child is raised in a stable, well brought up home, the child is going to grow up to be an average individual. On the other hand, if a child is raised in a home where they are physically and mentally abused, they have a greater chance of developing mental issues, and leading a wrongful life. Child abuse plays the most influential role when it comes down to criminal behaviour.
According to the Arizona Department of Child Safety (2015), 26,455 the Child Abuse hotline received 26, 455 calls that met the statutory criteria for a DCS report. In light of this statistic is remains crucial that the social worker be aware of and adhere to mandated reporter guidelines. The online mandated reporter training mentions that due to the relationship the clinician develops with a child, there is the possibility the child will disclose instances of abuse. It is very important, as the training points out, that the social worker manage this situation both accurately and delicately. In many cases, the child will be extremely vulnerable, compromised, afraid and perhaps even in pain. It is the social worker’s responsibility to create a calm, safe environment in order for the
