The Wright Brothers –Inventing the First Plane Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867 in Millville, Indiana and Orville Wright was born on August 19, 1871 in Dayton, Ohio to Milton Wright and Susan Catherine Koerner. They had two older brothers, Reuchlin and Lorin, and a younger sister Katharine who happened to share a birthday with Wilbur. Their father was a minister, in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, and spent a lot of time traveling for the church. During one of his trips their father found a small rubber-band powered toy helicopter made of paper, bamboo, and cork. It was modeled after the work of Alphonse Pe`naud; a French aeronautical pioneer. This was the beginning of their fascination with aeronautics. In 1878, Milton became a Bishop in the church and moved the family to Iowa. Neither of the Wright brothers received a high school diploma. Wilbur had enough credits to graduate, but the family moved back to Dayton, Ohio during his senior year. Orville dropped out in the eleventh grade, and went on to design and build his own printing press made from a broken tombstone and buggy parts. With Wilbur as the editor, the two brothers started their own weekly paper called West Side News. In 1892, they opened a bicycle rental and repair shop. They also, began manufacturing their own brand of bicycles, Van Cleves and St. Clairs, in 1896 in a room above their printing shop. Orville also invented a self-oiling wheel hub.
