The Writings of Edgar Allan Poe

Out of all writers, one stands out above the rest. Edgar Allen Poe is considered America's literary genius with his Gothic romantic poems and stories. Poe writes twisted, mysterious stories that shock the reader. He is considered to be a pioneer of many genres of literature. He is the father of gothic fiction to science fiction, with his creative plots and shifts in his stories. In most of Poe's stories and poems he uses unreliable or untrustworthy narrators to tell his stories. This was very different from the stories of this time, as Poe gave readers a break from romance stories that always had a happy ending. His use of unreliable narrators is what draws readers into his unique genre.

Mya Poe’s article “On Writing Instruction and a short game of Chess” is a unique exercise that appeals to the multiple learning styles and intelligences of students. She challenges herself to appeal to the “self-proclaimed bad writers.”(30) The confidence that students have in their ability to write is lacking. Poe discusses that there is no one way to approach writing. She has developed a way of challenging students to use their strengths and interests to develop their own unique writing process. I was inspired by her perception on the ways of knowing and understanding. That by teaching a student to translate their strengths and process to any subject inspires a metacognitive learning style.

Edgar Allan Poe was known for his writing and contributions in literacy. He influenced and contributed horror stories, short stories, and detective stories.

Edgar Allen Poe was bone in Boston on January 19 1809 to David and Elizabeth Poe. He lost his parents at the age of two years and had to be adopted by John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan. John Allan was a very wealthy man but he only gave Edgar a third of his school requirements and this alienated him from Edgar. When Allan’s wife dies Edgar also decides to move out because he could not put up with John Allan. Edgar loved poetry from a tender age. He even wrote verses to girls that he developed feelings for. He could have had his first poetry book published by the age of 14 years but there was no support both from his teachers and his adoptive parents. In the course of his life Edgar became an alcoholic and mentally disturbed and this enhanced his writing skills. He created his characters trough imagination to show mystery and adventure.

Nearly every important writer after Poe show signs of influence, especially when working in horrific humor or gothic humor. This quote by Edgar Allan Poe describes his obscure works which have been discussed and criticized in great detail for many years to come. Some readers believe that his works are too dark and eccentric maybe even deathly. Others believe his works to be masterpieces. However, one thing that is not up for debate is the fact that Edgar Allan Poe is a literary genius. Edgar Allan Poe, the creator of the ratiocinative story and the amateur sleuth and leading contributor to the gothic genre, is the greatest author of the mid-nineteenth century.

Many people enjoy the detective and crime shows, but what they may not realize is that Edgar Allan Poe was the one to pioneer this genre. For the short stories, poems, and a few books he wrote, Edgar Allan Poe is a recognized American writer. He lived in the era of westward expansion, slavery laws beginning to become an issue, and most influential to Poe, Tuberculosis(TB) was a major issue. There was not yet a cure for people with TB, in fact, there wouldn’t be a known cure for another 100 years after his life. He lost many people during his life; his father left before Poe was 3 years old, his mother died from TB when Poe was three. He moved into a foster home, but stories tell that his foster father did not like him so he struggled to find the support he needed both as a child and as a broke college student. Although many myths state that Poe was a drunkard and incapable of love, he was married. His outsiderness in his foster home likely influenced his writing, as well as his irregularity and uniqueness, and his horrid memories of how TB had taken some of his closes family. Poe’s unique literary techniques enhance his macabre writing style.

Edgar was taken into the home of a merchant from Richmond named John Allan. The remaining children were cared for by others. Poe's brother William died young and sister Rosalie later became insane. Later one of his teachers in Richmond said: "While the other boys wrote mere mechanical verses, Poe wrote genuine poetry; the boy was a born poet." Usually, fairy tales are in connection to big and illustrious happy endings. But in Edgar Allan Poe’s case, it is evident that they do not exist, for his stories more often than not bear a grotesque demeanor. His life was surrounded by death. All of the women in his life died young, including his mother, sister, and wife. By the age of three, he had experienced what most would not experience until nearly the middle or end of their lives. Living in such an atmosphere allowed Poe to reach deep into his emotions when writing. Edgar Allan Poe was known for his macabre metaphors. These metaphors challenged the reader to endeavor themselves into his simple words; coming to find the gothic elements portrayed. He most commonly portrayed love and death in his poems. Poe is even credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. Edgar Allan Poe utilizes symbolism and portrays an envious love tale, ending in tragedy to expose the speaker’s emotional state in the poem “Annabel Lee.”

In Annabel Lee, Edgar Allan Poe states, “We loved with a love that was more than love.” This saying is used by thousands of people everyday to their soul mate. The American Renaissance, which began in 1828 through 1865. Poe was an Anti-Transcendentalist, he wrote mostly about self-destruction (sin). Edgar Allan Poe enjoyed writing about death, sinful acts, and how others felt towards sin.

King has this to say about Poe's works, “He wasn't just a mystery/suspense writer,” adds the author many fans would describe as the modern Poe, Stephen King. “He was the first” (Hockensmith).
