The ancient Roman army was one of extreme power and excellence. To be a Roman soldier meant to be professional as well as hard working. The Roman army during its time was the greatest empire in the west until modern times. It was built upon the hostility of the great Roman soldier. Compared to the warriors they fought, the Romans appeared to be much more professional and controlled. The men of the Roman legion, which is a great number of soldiers, soon became the monarchs in heavy infantry at time when heavy infantry ruled the battlefield. The ability to modify and improve weapons, tactics and strategy proved them to be resourceful on and off the battlefield. A centurion carried a short rod, to show his importance. He could use that stick to beat any soldier who violated an order he made. Men were placed around the empire to hold off and fight rebellions, or to guard the frontier. When soldiers were not fighting they were training in stone or timber forts and preparing for war. If a soldier was already a Roman citizen, he could join the army as a legionary. Non-Romans joined as auxiliaries. An auxiliary was paid a third as much as a legionary. Auxiliaries guarded forts and frontiers, but also fought in battles, often in the front lines, where it was the most dangerous. In battle, men would march behind the legion’s standard, a silver aquila (eagle). The Roman army consisted of about 30 legions. Each legion had between 4,000 and 6,000 soldiers, called legionaries. The commanding officer of the whole legion was called the legate. Legionaries were the best Roman soldiers, and best paid. A large amount of the soldiers had special skills whether it be with a bow, flung stones from slingshots, or swimming rivers to surprise an enemy. The artillery consisted of giant catapults, called onagers, machines that fired rocks or balls of burning tar. Also the romans used big crossbows, called ballistas, too.
