The core of all professionally organized health education programs is the program planning process. While there are many models used for this process, an appropriate model to plan a skin cancer prevention program for high school youth in Matador Shores is the PRECEDE-PROCEED model. The PRECEDE-PROCEED model is participatory, community-oriented, incorporates multiple levels of influence and evaluation, and is adaptable for different needs and circumstances as one-sized programs do not fit all. It is a component of most successful community health promotion interventions. The community profile shows that in addition to the new Public Health Unity at the Department of Health Services for the County, with services offered for the uninsured, residents have traditionally relied on folk healers, and show a desire for community-driven health programs. The community is rich in diversity due to the recent influx of various cultures to Matador Shores, and has the capacity to grow as it is linked to other cities via public transportation, has outdoor spaces for future community renovation along Southern California’s vibrant coast. To further ask what the Matador Shores community wants and needs to improve quality of life, we will conduct additional needs assessments through key informant interviews, focus groups, and public forums--going directly into the community to see where they are at and where they can go. This will lend information for asset mapping. After the social diagnosis, we will procure an assets map for the community members of Matador Shores. The key informant interviews, focus groups, and public forum yielded information on the perceptions of health needs from geographical, socioeconomic and occupational areas throughout Matador Shores.
