The subject of this case study is Emily Lang. Emily is an 18 year old woman who has come into a small non-government agency seeking help. The organisation, “Pathfinders for Young People”, assists inner city youths in Brisbane through a number of channels. These include providing information to young people with regards to medium to long term support, casework support, material aid and assistance for housing. Emily has presented in a state of distress and requests material aid assistance to purchase a bus ticket for travelling to live with her biological father. Some key social work theories which are highly relevant to Emily’s case include general systems theory, psychodynamic theory, social learning theory, and conflict theory.

The general systems theory places greater emphasis on the relationships between societies, organisations, groups and an individual wherein they interact (Kondrat 2012). Through considering the elements of cross cultural practice, the organisation can gain an understanding of the human behaviour of Emily within the social environment. It is clear that she has been very resilient considering her situation, and thus the organisation needs to focus on her strengths and motivate her towards her goals, whilst helping to ease her stress.

The Psychodynamic Theory focuses on how unconscious needs and internal emotions affect emotional development and motivate or drive human behaviour (Woods & Robinson 2006). This is highly relevant to the case as Emily explained how much she really loved her job and her colleagues, and that leaving was not her choice.
