The visual style of video game can very on a huge scale. Each game will have a different style including terrain, architecture & objects. These combined will make each game unique. Video games have featured terrain since the earliest 3D games were made. Terrain is the entire landscape of the game this can include Hills, Plains & Mountains. These would all be created to match the visual style of the game. E.g. if you were creating terrain for Skyrim it would be set in the past so the building would look old and broken the terrain will have high mountains and lots of trees. . These character will normally have set paths to travel to or have set positions. You are able to interact with NPC and get certain mission or quests. This will be what shows the player of the game certain information this normally includes health, items & money. Diablo 3 does this in a very clever way having all of this information on a top layer of their game so it will always be there for the user to see. Diablo always incorporates the main visual style of the game into their feedback interface having it all the same colours and look.
