Their Eyes Were Watching God Chapter One Analysis

Everyone has a goal, a mission, a dream. Many dreams of people are far away and in many cases are perceived to be mysterious and merely out of reach. In the story Their Eyes were Watching God, this notion is expressed by the symbol of a horizon. The horizon is a faraway horizontal line between the earth and the sky; between human life and the beyond. This mid point between the possible and impossible is where dreams, wishes, and desires lay. The horizon symbolizes dreams that are seemingly out of reach. In the beginning of the story, this is the state of the dreams of Janie, her horizon. Through chapters 1-9, readers understand through the two failed marriages of Janie, that she dreams to love and be free. Janie wants to love another person

Their Eyes Were Watching God was written in 1937 by Zora Neale Hurston. This story follows a young girl by the name of Janie Crawford. Janie Crawford lived with her grandmother in Eatonville, Florida. Janie was 16 Years old when her grandmother caught her kissing a boy out in the yard. After seeing this her grandmother told her she was old enough to get married, and tells her she has found her a husband by the name of Logan. Logan was a much, much older man. This book later follows Janie through two more marriages to Jody Starks, and Tea Cake. All three marriages extremely different from one another, along with Janie’s role in each marriage. Janie always had her own individual personality, her true self, but she also had an outer personality, the person she would pretend to be for each of her husbands. The Book took us through a journey of each of these marriages and through the journey of Janie finding herself.

Zora Neale Hurston’s highly acclaimed novel Their Eyes Were Watching God demonstrates many of the writing techniques described in How to Read Literature like a Professor by Tomas C. Foster. In Foster’s book, he describes multiple reading and writing techniques that are often used in literature and allow the reader to better understand the deeper meaning of a text. These of which are very prevalent in Hurston’s novel. Her book follows the story of an African American woman named Janie as she grows in her search for love. Hurston is able to tell Janie’s great quest for love with the use of a vampiric character, detailed geography, and sexual symbolism; all of which are described in Foster’s book.

In the novel "Their Eyes were Watching God," the main character, Janie, faces an inner battle in her three marriages, to speak or not to speak, which manifests itself differently with Logan, Joe, and Tea Cake. In her first marriage to Logan Killicks, Janie has her idea of what a marriage should look like shattered, as she failed to fall into the romantic idea of love that she held dear (Myth and Violence in Zora Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God). In her second marriage, to Joe “Jody” Starks, Janie buried her fight and spirit within herself, as she attempted to fit into the mold of the “perfect wife” Joe imagined (In Search Of Janie). Finally, in her marriage to Tea Cake, she feels the love she has longed for, and is accepted as the strong, independent woman she is (Janie Crawford Character Analysis). In every marriage, Janie feels the various effects of each man, as they either encourage or diminish her voice and inner spark.

Chapter 6 of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Hurston starts out by describing how Janie detests running the store, but also how she finds some joy in listening to the bright stories the townsfolk have on the porch. The guys there like to tease Matt Bonner- a man with an overworked good-for-nothing mule. Jody, regardless of Janie's wonderment in the stories, forbids her from hanginging out with the trashy people out on the porch. Because of the men who constantly are entranced by Janie’s hair, Jody commands her to wear a head-rag around her head due to his overgrown jealousy. One day Matt Bonner’s mule runs away and ends up outside of the store, where some townsmen are torturing it for their own amusement. Janie does not like this and mutters her disapproval, Jody hears her and decides to buy the mule for five dollars so it can finally be at peace. After the mule finally dies, Jody has a mock funeral which turns into a town wide gathering, none of which Janie is allowed to attend to. Later on at the store, Janie and Jody get into an argument where she tells him that he is no fun, and he tells her that he is just trying to be responsible. As time goes on the indignation that Janie holds for Jody only grows stronger. One day, Jody slaps Janie-after seven years of having met each other after a treacherous dinner. Later that same day, Mrs. Robbins begs Jody for a little meat for her family-which Jody spares. The men on the porch talk crudely about the woman,

Home,” (51). Jody also forbade her to tell stories with the townspeople because it he thought it unbecoming. By trying to suppress her voice he is trying to control her identity of who he wants her to be and not who she really is. Janie stands up to Jody finally on her deathbed telling him “Ah’m just tryin’ tuh make you know what kinda person Ah is befo’ it’s too late,”

In both the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, and the poem “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, young girls are lectured on who they should be in life and how they should act.

In chapter five, Jody and Janie escape to Eatonville, Florida where Mr. Jody Starks becomes Mayor Jody Starks of Eatonville. He becomes mayor by benefiting the town. At first, he buys an additional two-hundred acres of land, from Captain Eaton, to the original fifty acres. After buying the land, Jody plans to build a store and a post office and calls a town meeting to discuss. At his store, Jody is quickly named mayor and says that wives shouldn’t make speeches. His opinion angers Janie, but she remains silent. After becoming mayor, Jody decides that the town needs a street lamp. After the lamp arrives, Jody puts it on display for a week, and it becomes a source of pride for the whole town. Janie hints that she wants to spend more time

Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God focuses on a beautiful mulatto woman named Janie Crawford. This piece of literature carves a tale of what was once an awful time to be an African American. It begins with a brief section of what was the end of the story, and the flash-forward quickly ends after the first chapter. Chapter 2 picks up at the story's true beginning.

“Ships at distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others, they sail farever on the horizon…” (Hurston 1). The opening sentence of Zora Neale Hurston’s novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, translates into that people are always viewing their dreams from far. Some are able to their goals and others are left only thinking about them. The protagonist of the novel, Janie, spends the expanse of her life searching to find her true self. Along her journey, Janie meets Tea Cake, a man whose love guides her to her voice. The complexity of their relationship is shown through their passionate, yet doubting love.

In chapter three of the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie was married to Logan Killicks and began to live with him on his isolated area of land. Janie was under the impression that her love for Logan would begin almost immediately after the two were married. Janie believed this due to the fact that her Nanny had told her so beforehand. When Janie arrive at Logan’s house she went inside and began to wait for her love for him to begun. After three months had passed and she still felt nothing for Logan she began to worry and went to visit her Nanny for advice. When she arrived at her Nanny’s house she began to tell her of her issues and as usual Nanny became irritated. She told her to do what she was told by Logan and that eventually her love for him would begin to show. I feel that Janie would never truly be able to feel any type

Plot: Within the first 6 chapters of the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, we are introduced to the main character Janie Crawford, who is returning to her hometown after many years of being absent. As she is talking with Pheoby Watson, she begins to talk about her life while she was away and is very descriptive about it. She talks about her struggles in life and her marriage with Logan Killicks and how she didn’t love him at all. She then speaks of her marriage with Joe Starks and how they find a town where they can happily live together. She speaks of how Joe made her a lot happier than Logan and she was more content where she was living.

The main character, Janie Woods, is unlike any other character throughout the novel, being 75% white and 25% black. For this she was not only looked up to but also looked down upon. She was an outsider within her own community while from the male perspective, she was a prized possession to anyone that could gain her affection. It is important that Hurston told the story about how Janie reached her full potential because it clearly demonstrates how anyone can gain happiness if they simply try. The women on the porch who judge her have hopes and dreams like anyone else. However, Janie is different than them by the way she risks everything she has to chase after her dreams. She encountered many difficulties with this approach at first, involving her marriages with Logan and Joe. Although, she overcame such challenges stronger than ever. Her ending may seem melancholy with the death of Tea Cake, but it is actually tragically perfect. Everything Janie dreamed of as a child was true love and this is exactly what she ended up with. She gained a voice in her life which was masked in her previous relationships. At the end of the novel, Janie is quite content with where her life stands and it is clear to the reader that the problems she endured were actually quite necessary. Although it was sorrowful to see Janie grappling for her dreams, Hurston uses each obstacle to

Principle is a complicated matter; while many choose to act upon it, others see to defy it, for some it is their base, for others their crutch, but for however unintelligible it maybe it is unique, undefinable, irregular and variable. So is rare the case where one’s deeply held principles, their ideology and their inner self remain static chiefly in times of crisis and change. Many a mortal let alone metaphysical is immune to the treacheries of time and lapse which is why Janie’s case is so unique; in the framework of Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is born a black woman in a time where neither measure meant much. Yet in defiance of this even from the times of her youth Janie remains defiant, jovial, and content throughout her marriages and the hardships endured in each of her marriages.

Their whole relationship was foreshadowed previously when Jody bought a mule from an owner partly because of Janie but primarily because he wanted to show how powerful he is. When he buys the mule from the previous owner, he is buying Janie because when he does so she treats him as a savior since she felt bad for that poor mule. The mule was treated horribly and soon when Jody began to beat Janie so was she. She couldn’t speak out against Jody because when she did insult him in front of all the other men he beat her.
