Throughout the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, the protagonist, Janie, goes through many trials and difficulties in her life to find the one thing she wants most, freedom. Two impactful areas of her life would have to be her silent voice and her cloistered hair. In the novel, Janie is shown to be very silent at times, she doesn’t really speak, and keeps everything to herself because of the chains that held her down. Her hair was another chain that held her down, whenever she put it up, it was as if she was being kept away and her freedom is gone. Both her silent voice and cloistered hair involve Janie’s character being oppressed and held back. A significant moment in the story was when Janie took off her kerchief and letting down her hair in chapter 8 of the novel. Since her hair was down, Janie could finally be free and be herself. Her hair reflects her beauty, confidence, and freedom.
To begin with, Janie’s silent voice and cloistered hair are two main parts of her character in the book. Her silent voice is shown mainly when she was with Joe. Janie’s first time meeting with Joe Starks was a good and hopeful experience, but as Janie spent more time with him and he showed his true colors, she realized she made a mistake. Jody was a cruel, oppressive, and a degrading man who didn’t think of Janie as nothing else but a trophy. He would not let her go to certain events or speak out. Hurston uses the narrative consciousness in Their Eyes, to characterize those who are silent and lack their own voice, by doing this Hurston gives depth, to those whose voices, are heard. Throughout the entire novel, the development of the male voice seems to parallel the development of Janie's. The men in Janie's life have voices, and it is by her relationships with these men, that Janie's voice gets stronger. Janie becomes more self confident with each relationship she endures. Hurston, by using the consciousness narrative, is actually speaking for Janie; the narrator and Janie are like one. This might be the reason that Hurston gives little voice to Janie's character. Janie is not silenced in the novel, she is expressed through the narrative. Which if the reader does not close read, the reader will not comprehend this aspect of Hurston's novel.
Joe is power hungry and seeks to dominate Janie, who cannot be held back and craves the freedom to manage her own life. With such caustic tension, it seems odd that Janie would stay with Joe until his death. Clearly, she was not afraid to walk out on a husband, so why did she choose to stay? Though Joe was frequently an oppressive dictatorial husband, he still offered more love to her than the cold, quasi-emotionless Logan Killicks. Only after finding love with Tea Cake, however, would Janie realize one of the major themes of the novel: in order to gain true happiness, you cannot sacrifice one desire for another, in her case freedom from oppression for love.
She ended up living a life full of manipulation and mediocrity. While living with Joe, she had to tend to many different tasks as his wife. She wasn't independent with him either. She was Joe's tag-a-long. 'She went through many silent rebellions over things like that. Such a waste of life and time. But Joe kept saying that she could do it if she wanted to and he wanted her to use her privileges. That was the rock she was battered against.' (Hurston, 51) Janie always had to wear her hair a certain way, always up in a head rag, in order not to attract attention to other men and women. She was always in a state of loneliness with herself. While married to Janie, he would not allow her to attend the people's gatherings believing that she does not belong to such a group of lower class people. Joe was depriving Janie of her independence and sanity. "Naw, Ah ain't no young gal no mo' but den Ah ain't no old woman either. Ah reckon Ah looks mah age too. But Ah'm us woman every inch of me, and Ah know it. Dat's uh whole lot more'n you kin say. You big-bellies round here and put out a lot of brag, but 'tain't nothin' to it but yo' big voice. Humph! Talkin' 'bout me lookin' old! When you pull down yo' britches, you look lak de change uh life." She is free from Joe, and letting her hair down represents the return of Janie’s freedom. “Before she slept that night she burnt up every one of her head rags and went about the house next morning with her in one thick braid well below her waist. That was the only change people saw in her” (Hurston 89). This shows how she is “burning” up her stifled life with Joe, by burning her head rags and releases her hair. When Joe was alive, Janie was forced into working at the store, which she thought was “waste of time and life” (Hurston 54). Janie’s character shows many strengths throughout the course of the movie Their Eyes Were Watching God. However, most of the strengths that Janie shows in the movie never appear in the book. In the beginning of the movie, the audience sees Janie working in the fields and hog pens with Logan. Doing this gives her strengths in self-dependency. Throughout Janie’s relationship with her next husband, Joe, she continued to keep her strong voice but showed weakness emotionally. Speaking of "change and chance", Janie was immediately attracted to Joe Starks. This is exactly what Janie wanted at the time: a change from her life with Logan and a second chance at life and love. But the change and chance that Joe was speaking of was very different than what Janie wanted or expected. He was not looking for love or a companion, but instead wanted to use Janie to promote his image as a leader for his new plans to start a black community. Janie’s outward appearance and her inward thoughts contrast following Joe’s death. She finally frees herself from his control only after he dies as she, “…tore off the kerchief…and let down her plentiful hair” (87). In freeing her hair, Janie begins to free herself from others’ control and social norms. However, she chooses to keep it tied up until after Jody’s funeral in order to keep appearances that she is grieving his passing in front of the townspeople. However, on the inside, Janie doesn’t really feel any sorrow and “sent her face to Joe’s funeral, and herself went rollicking with the springtime across the world” (88). It is only after Joe’s elaborate funeral that Janie shows her first act of freedom by burning “every one of her head rags and went about the house next morning with her hair in one thick braid swinging well below her waist” (89). She chose to let her hair be free from his domination, thus freeing herself from him overall and allowing herself to move onto the next journey in her life.
In The Novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie does find herself at the end of the novel. Zora Neale Hurston displays this perfectly, with all the conflicts and struggles going on she finds her way to her true voice. All the husbands she has gone through, and what she has experienced. Hurston effectively shows Janie’s victory over oppression throughout the book. She has allowed to use her language as power, and use that power to grow into what she is at the end of the book. This movement allows her the opportunity to explore and form her ideas and voice in solitude. These external variables cause her to look inward and not depend on others as a source of survival. In Janie’s marriage with Jody Starks, her hair is representative of her power when Jody represses it and when he indirectly liberates it by dying. At first, Jody draws Janie in with his own authority, self-confidence, and good looks. Janie seems infatuated with these characteristics; yet, ironically, she comes to loathe them, since she realizes that authority creates an air of condescension, self-confidence causes arrogance, and good looks eventually become mundane. Jody, in addition, seems to be extremely misogynistic and treats women like property. He accordingly believes that oppressing them as he sees fit is an acceptable manner of treatment, which is shown when he forces Janie to constantly wear a head-rag in
The world of Janie Crawford in Their Eyes Were Watching God was one of oppression and disappointment. She left the world of her suffocating grandmother to live with a man whom she did not love, and in fact did not even know. She then left him to marry another man who offered her wealth in terms of material possessions but left her in utter spiritual poverty. After her second husband's death, she claims responsibility and control of her own life, and through her shared love with her new husband, Teacake, she is able to overcome her status of oppression. "Jody told her to dress up and stand in the store all that evening" (Hurston 58). That must've been Jody Starks' most said command to Janie throughout her marriage. He only used her because she was so pretty, and didn't want much more. Being proud of Janie as his wife, the mayor's pretty wife, he himself built the image for Janie as 'trophy wife'.

She deals with personal relationships as well as searches for self-awareness. Janie Crawford is more than a heroine, however, she is a woman who has overcome the restrictions placed on her by the oppressive forces and people in her life.
