The backbone of the novel The Kite Runner is Amir’s betrayal of Hassan and how it affects him later in his life. His injustice to Hassan is what causes him to stress and break down ending his friendship with Hassan. He then seeks redemption for his wrong doings and it is left to the reader’s opinion whether he captured it or not. Amir betrayals of Hassan include being a false friend, choosing to be a bystander when Hassan is raped, and by his actions to get Hassan to leave. Amir betrays Hassan in The Kite Runner by pretending to being Hassan’s friend. Throughout the story the reader can tell that Hassan’s love for Amir is selfless and Amir’s love for hassan is selfish. That is proved when Amir asks Hassan if he would ever lie to him and Hassan replies with ‘I’d sooner eat dirt’(54). Amir continues to to tease him after that asking if he would really eat dirt for him when in reality Hassan figuratively ate dirt for Amir for most of his childhood. He took the blame for shooting the neighbor dog with his slingshot, when Amir pressured him into doing it in the first place. Hassan also stood up for and saved Amir in the first altercation with Assef. In return, Amir does not help Hassan when he is in need of it, he chooses to watch and save himself from the horror of rape that Hassan has to endure. Amir’s twelve year old mind does not know how to treat this hazara boy. At Baba’s residence it is safe for them to play games, laugh together, and be the brothers they truly are, but
