Another example of a tight relationship is when Finny and Gene go to the swimming pool and Finny decides to jump in. “‘ Don't say anything about it, to… anyone’ ‘not say anything about it! When you broke the school record.” (44). This quote shows friendship because when Finny broke the school swimming record Gene was being a good friend because he was proud of him and wanted people to know. Lastly an example of Finny and Genes friendship is when Finny decides that they should go to the beach and gene does not want to let him down so he tags along. “The only real swimming is the ocean’ then in the everyday mediocre tone he used when he was proposing something really outrageous he added, ‘ let's go to the beach’”(45). As Gene gain his knowledge, he becomes more conscious about his greed and desires for being successful at beating Finny for his athleticism and capability. Gene had came to a realization that he hated Finny and wanted to be better than him. It was all a misunderstanding because Finny never

In this passage Finny talked Gene into jumping off of a tall tree into the lake near their school in order to stay in their club. Once Gene is up on the tree he felt doubt that he would land safely. However, in order to stay friends with Finny, he had to do it. This is an Intratextual Connection because earlier in the novel Gene explains that even though he doesn’t like doing everything Finny feels like doing, he feels like
In the beginning of the novel, Gene, is a clueless individual. He sees the worst in people and lets his evil side take over not only his mind but also his body. The novel “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles is a story of friendship and conflict. John Knowles uses Gene’s envy to demonstrate that jealousy ruins friendships. This is shown multiple times, including fake friendships, internal conflict becoming physical, and all conflict resulting in the loss of trust of one another.
In A Separate Peace Gene and Finny’s friendship has to tackle a lot of obstacles. Gene and Finny were never exactly on the same page when it came to their friendship. Each of them was always assuming about the other. One of the book’s messages is that friendships take work, and if the friendship is worth it, then you should put in the work. In A Separate Peace, there are prevalent themes of friendship, how friends can help or hurt one another, and the sacrifices made for loved ones.
John Knowles’ “A Separate Peace” takes place at a boarding school during World War II. Best friends Gene and Finny have been inseparable during their time at the Devon School. This is until reality hits Gene, and he slowly starts to realize that he is inferior to his best friend. Through the unbalanced friendship between two teenagers in “A Separate Peace,” Knowles illustrates that a loss of identity may be present in a relationship if there is an unequal amount of power.
Friendship is one of the most important relationships that people form in all of their lives. Children build bonds when they are young and use those skills to continue fulfilling friendships for the rest of their lives. Throughout A Separate Peace, John Knowles displays the good things about close friendships but also the hardships that often occur. Gene and Finny are two boys that attend Devon school. Which is a school that closely reflects the one that Knowles attended while he was growing up. Both Gene and Finny emotionally grow despite their opposite personalities, and they go through several situations that force them to consider the value of their friendship. Through their time at the school, Knowles reveals Gene’s and Finny’s
Throughout the book both characters realize they need each other more than they think. The more Gene justifies his feelings toward Phineas, the more he is ashamed of his actions. Gene is jealous that Finny is able to get away with anything and everything: “I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn't help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal. There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little.” (Knowles, 25). Gene’s envies Finny’s accepted rebellious character but is unable to tell him. Afterwards, Gene, towards the middle of the book, feels his need for Finny to get caught, almost as if he is against him: “This time he wasn't going to get away with it. I could feel myself becoming unexpectedly excited at that.” (27). Slowly Gene turns his jealousy for Finny to hatred creating the downfall of their relationship. At Devon Finny is known for his great athleticism and his ability to win at everything, ending up as first every time: "You always win at sports.” (35).Gene feels more jealousy towards finny especially when Finny breaks the swimming record without training, not only showing he can win but he can do it without breaking a sweat. Finny’s athletic ability reaches Gene’s mind and his anger builds up adding more weight to the bridge: “Was he trying to impress me or something? Not tell anybody? When he had broken a school record
One of the most major conflicts of the book is Gene wishing he could be like his best friend Finny and being dangerously jealous of him. Genes jealousy got the best of him when he decided to step on a branch on purpose, which leads to Finny falling and breaking his leg. Sadly, Finny breaks his leg again and dies from bone marrow passing into the bloodstream during surgery and it was caused by the first break of his leg that Gene caused. Gene learns from this that he should not compare himself to others, because it is simply not fair. There is growth shown in Gene when he learns this and he knows that if he let it happen again it could have tragic consequences. It took losing a best friend for Gene to know that he
Friendships can be positive or negative. A good friend is supportive, kind and trustworthy. However, a negative friendship can cause a bad influence and habits. Finny and Gene have many qualities that combine to create a terrible friendship. They are not supportive of each others decisions and are very envious of the others abilities. Throughout the novel, Gene’s friendship with Finny becomes unhealthy and detrimental.
Although Gene and Finny are close they seem to have a sense of rivalry with everything they do. Gene is the main one to be pretty envious of Finny throughout the a majority of the book. Gene is jealous that Finny can get away with breaking almost any rule during the summer session.Gene even decides he won’t jump off the tree until Finny does it because he doesn’t think he will have a good chance of getting away with it. He also doesn’t seem to do it until Finny thinks that it is okay and has decided to create the Super Suicide Society.
For example, Finny and Gene were supposed to be the very best friends, but Gene’s actions lead to Finny being crippled, and his eventual death. This happened because Gene was not completely honest and open with Finny in the way that he expected. Also, Brinker had an idea of how everyone should treat Finny, believing that people should not try to hide of soften the fact that Finny was now irreversibly crippled. In turn, this resulted in an interrogation leading to Finny panicking, falling, and eventually dying due to his bone marrow entering his bloodstream. Both of these incidents occurred because none of them took the time to understand one another and therefore their relationships were unhealthy. This caused them to make decisions that hurt themselves and others beyond repair.
Second, the injury puts Finny in the hospital, separating the two, which cause Gene to suffer depression. As Finny is badly wounded, he has to leave his boarding school, Devon, for a long period of time. He spends his time in the hospital, away from Gene. FurthermoreThis makes Gene regret his decision even more. Not only are Gene and Finny physically separated, but also emotionally separated. Essentially, Gene loses his
To start off, Gene purposely made Finny fall out of the tree. This is clearly something you would not do to someone in the first place, let alone if you were friends. After his fall, Finny shattered his leg and Gene didn’t show any empathy or care, even though he caused it. You can tell this when after Finny falls out of the tree Gene states, “I jumped into the river, every trace of my fear of this forgotten” (60). Gene shows no care which shows he doesn’t support Finny and by the definition of friendship (a state of mutual trust and
