As we know today, civil rights and stuff have been greatly improved since colonial times. For one, slavery is illegal, as well as segregation among schools and other public facilities. They can vote, their wages have improved, other stuff. In this patriarchal world, it can be believed that most of this stuff prob wouldn’t have happened, had it not been for people like MLK, Lena Horne, Maya Angelou, Lorraine Hansberry. Their powerful voices sparked a revolution throughout the United States, through their perseverance and stuff. During the 1800s, even after the slaves were freed during the Reconstruction period after Civil War, there was this thing called Jim Crow Laws. With the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment, African-Americans, (as well as other minority races) were now able to vote. Unfortunately, the South did not agree with this (I mean, we fought a whole war over it), and found loopholes in the amendment. For one, everyone must pass a literacy test to be able to vote. It depicted life in Chicago as a lower-class African-American family, whose one chance at having a better life is nearly lost when one poor decision is made. One major point in her play is the theme of hope. This theme was a catalyst in the beginning of a movement. In addition to this, the hardships the family faces accurately portrays the struggles of life as an African-American, and the prejudices experienced against the race (Orem, 2017). Lena Horne, a musician during the civil rights movement, also sparked many actions against discrimination. One of her most famous songs, Stormy Weather, makes the comparison of the battles of racism to a thunderstorm, in that they are “...bare, gloom and misery everywhere, stormy weather.” (Waldron, 2010).
