In the movie Avatar, James Cameron accurately portrays European imperialism in the Na’vi tribe. During the time of European imperialism, the Europeans colonized Africa to introduce their way of life and to take over their land. The Europeans wanted the natives’ land for their natural resources and its potential benefit to the European economy. Likewise, the humans in Avatar seeked to colonize Pandora to mine the unobtanium rock for their benefit. James Cameron used the ideas of racism, cultural assimilation, and geopolitics to accurately paint a picture of European imperialism and its effects on the lives of the natives. On the other hand, Avatar portrayed an accurate relation to European imperialism through the racism of both the Na’vi tribe and humans. As Jake Sully began exploring the Na’vi culture, he began to favor and fight for their tribe. In his dialogue with Mile Quaritch, Jake was asked “how [it] felt to betray [his] own race,” (Avatar). The humans treated the Na’vi tribe as mere creatures and failed to realize that they were important to nature. The humans introduced themselves superior to the natives on Pandora, giving themselves a title that was greater than them. Because of their advanced technology and artillery, the humans were able to drive the Na’vi tribe out of their home and take control their territory. Likewise, in H.T. Thompson’s “Black Man’s burden,” he explains the daily lives of the natives while the Europeans took control of their homeland. As
Throughout history, many powerful nations interfered with nations that were weaker than they were. This form of sabotaging a nation is economic, political or cultural life is called as imperialism. Imperialism is often separated into two sects. The first one is old imperialism, which was the period from the 1500s to the 1800s, where European nation started to colonize many areas such as the Americas, and parts of Southeast Asia. On the other hand, the new imperialism was the period between the years “1870-1914”, where Europe became more focused on expanding their land into Asia and Africa. Imperialism had many pros and cons. In addition, it also had many causes led by the feeling of nationalism.
Avatar displays a solid anti-imperialism message. Imperialism occurs when a particular country utilises their political and military powers to gain control over other areas of the world. According to Alcock and Young, 1974 there are five categories of imperialism which are economic, cultural, political, military, and communication. However, the movie Avatar exhibits two kinds of imperialism which is military and economic imperialism. The Na’Vi people are considered to be poor indigenous people, while the RDA are technologically literate and rich.

Money, military, death or subordinance, these are the main elements of imperialism. Imperialism, the practice of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force, is often thought of as negative because of the use of military force. The age of imperialism lasted from 1870-1914. One example of imperialism from this time period is when the countries Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Spain all took control over different parts of Africa. One movie that accurately portrays this ideal negatively is Avatar, a movie directed by James Cameron and released on December 18, 2009. Avatar is about a group of ex-military soldiers that travel to Pandora, an alien life planet, and the elements of imperialism shown
By the 1800s, Europe had gained considerable power- centrally governed nation-states had emerged and the Industrial Revolution had deeply enriched different country’s economies. Advances in science and technology, industry, transportation, and communication provided Western nations with many advantages. Encouraged by their new military and economic prestige, European countries embarked on a path of aggressive expansion that today’s historians call “New Imperialism (1800-1914).” Europeans brought much of the world under their influence and control, dominating various countries politically, economically, and culturally. Though the West reaped the benefits of foreign imperialism, native peoples felt its harmful effects. For example, in Document
In the year 2009, James Cameron wrote and directed one of the most remarkable films I have ever seen ‘Avatar’. This science-fiction saga has a story line that is engaging and captivating for its audience. Avatar took place on a moon called Pandora. Humans discovered very valuable natural resources on Pandora and did whatever it took to obtain what they needed from Pandora. The people of Pandora are Na’vi’s, a 10 foot tall, blue-skinned humanoid alien group that lived in the rainforest or Pandora. The Humans found a way to interact with the Na’vi’s by artificial yet organic avatars that were controlled with a human mind and conscience. Jake Sully, a paraplegic marine who was given the task to manipulate the Na’vi’s into leaving their home. Sully entered
Throughout history around the world, imperialism took a big role. Imperialism had positive and negative effects. The Age of Imperialism took place between 1800-1914. During this time, Europe played a big role and was a major world leader. Many European countries had set up their colonies in many parts of the world such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Because of the European imperialism, they grew in power, making them a big part of the world’s power. They are also gaining natural resources and land. However, although Europe is gaining all the positive effects of this imperialism, the other countries--Asia, Africa, and Latin America--had an entirely different effect. Instead of gaining power like the Europeans, these countries and their people are being mistreated. They had all their land, culture, freedom, respect taken away from them. In addition to these negative effects, there was also racism involved.
The Na'vi are the only humanoid residents of Pandora, which is otherwise populated by abundant flora and fauna. In the imperialism parable, the Na'vi are the native peoples of Africa, the Americas, Australia and Asia; while the humans in Avatar are representative of the Europeans during the Age of Imperialism. During the Age of Imperialism, Europeans spread across the globe, setting up colonies and exploiting the resources of the lands that they found. When they began to set up colonial rule in those lands, there was tremendous suffering among the native peoples. Many native peoples during the Age of Imperialism lost their way of life to the imperialist powers.
Throughout the 19th and 20th century, imperialism was a common force used by Europeans against ethnic countries. They used a superior demeanor implemented by social darwinism to convince natives that their way of life and international affairs were uncivilized in order to gain control of their land for selfish economic interests. Although the Europeans promised a progressive society by establishing colonies, they also forced civilization, stole resources, and stripped away culture.
Google states, ”Imperialism is a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force”. The European used native countries and people for their own purpose. There were some benefits and costs of European imperialism on native countries. One benefit was they opened schools and provided medications for everyone because they thought it was their duty. One cost is British treated African like slaves. They were sold and bought like objects and were treated brutally. Another cost is The Scramble For Africa, It is when European power fought control for large parts of Africa.
The movie Avatar is about how the human race invades a planet called Pandora to mine a certain kind of resource and fights with the Na’vi, the race of creatures that live on Pandora. The main character Jake Sulley decides to take his brothers
Avatar uses a variety of film genres and styles. One of the styles is the Cowboys versus Indians theme. It is clear that Avatar is a product of post-colonialism: it shows the Na'vi as the relatively harmless yet environmentally respectful and spiritually in tuned indigenous population, while the humans are a corporate military whose only goal is mine the resources of Pandora. The film presents an anti-military narrative. The soldiers are portrayed as cruel, violent, and brainless brutes, with only mercenary intentions. They are the stereotype of the ultimate warrior. They perpetuate the “might is right” myth. All of them are males, except for a female helicopter pilot, who ultimately defects to the
Christopher Columbus, Jacques Cartier and Henry Hudson, all famous European explorers and settlers who helped establish colonization in Canada. Without the Colonial Era one would think Canada would not exist but in fact Canada did exist and was inhabited by native nations. So at what cost does colonization have? Just the mere destruction of a prosperous indigenous population. The famous Canadian director James Cameron and his talented team, set out to bring their perspective on the sensitive social issue of colonialism using the movie Avatar as the focal point. Avatar presents a painfully accurate take on how and why colonialism occurs, in conjunction with the impacts on aboriginal societies. Colonization results in the exploitation and extermination of indigenous communities which are brought to light by the producer’s of the movie Avatar over several audience outreach methods, including a dvd cover, posters and a trailer.
There are many references to imperialism in the movie that is similar to real life. In avatar they had missionaries introduce them into education and the way the humans worked. This is similar to when the Europeans were in Africa. Later in Africa they gave up on wanting to learn the ways of the European people so they began
To explore on Pandora, whose atmosphere is very poisonous to people, scientists invented Avatars, who look like the Na’vi and are operated by genetically matched humans. By lying in the machine box, people can operate avatars as if they were living outside like other Na’vi. Jake Sully, a paraplegic veteran, is chosen as part of Avatar program to replace his deceased identical twin brother who worked for the program. Colonel Quaritch promises Jake that he helps them to collect information about the Na’vi and a giant tree called Hometree, the company will
