Theme Of Imperialism In Avatar

In the movie Avatar, James Cameron accurately portrays European imperialism in the Na’vi tribe. During the time of European imperialism, the Europeans colonized Africa to introduce their way of life and to take over their land. The Europeans wanted the natives’ land for their natural resources and its potential benefit to the European economy. Likewise, the humans in Avatar seeked to colonize Pandora to mine the unobtanium rock for their benefit. James Cameron used the ideas of racism, cultural assimilation, and geopolitics to accurately paint a picture of European imperialism and its effects on the lives of the natives. On the other hand, Avatar portrayed an accurate relation to European imperialism through the racism of both the Na’vi tribe and humans. As Jake Sully began exploring the Na’vi culture, he began to favor and fight for their tribe. In his dialogue with Mile Quaritch, Jake was asked “how [it] felt to betray [his] own race,” (Avatar). The humans treated the Na’vi tribe as mere creatures and failed to realize that they were important to nature. The humans introduced themselves superior to the natives on Pandora, giving themselves a title that was greater than them. Because of their advanced technology and artillery, the humans were able to drive the Na’vi tribe out of their home and take control their territory. Likewise, in H.T. Thompson’s “Black Man’s burden,” he explains the daily lives of the natives while the Europeans took control of their homeland. As
