What is love? The dictionary defines love as, “an intense feeling of deep affection”. As you may know, there is a lot more that goes into this feeling then what the dictionary gives us. Love is not exclusive to romantic lovers either Everyone defines love differently. The intent of this paper is not define love. Insted we will focus on different types of love and how they are illustrated in the play, Midsummer Night’s Dream, written by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare presents many different types of love in his play. The first one being parental love. Parental love is just that, love a parent or parents have for their offspring (children). Midsummer Night’s Dream, shows us this love between Egeus and Hermia. Egeus being the father of Hermia. In the play, Egeus comes off as a very strict and very much as wanting to control his daughter, Hermia’s love life. Egeus acts this way not because he hates Hermia, It is actually the opposite. Egeus loves his daughter and believes he knows best for her when it comes to her suitor. For example Egeus states, “ Scornful Lysander, true, he hath my love, And what is mine my love shall render him. And she is mine, and all my right of her I do estate unto Demetrius.” (act 1, scene 1, 95). Egeus is saying that he loves Demetrius and knows that he will have the best intentions of making his daughter happy. This is something that I do believe all parents have some insight to.
