Ernest Hemingway lived his life to the fullest, living in countless cities, Paris, Chicago, Key West and Toronto. In each and everyone of these place he experienced different lifestyles. He uses his experiences to expand and enlighten his view on life. Hemingway writes about his experiences in novels such as The Old Man and the Sea and In Our Time.

The Old Man and the Sea and In Our Time both portray a consistent theme of maturity. In the novel In Our Time we see the protagonist Nick develope from a adolescent boy to a mature man with the help of others around him. We are first introduced to Nick at the start of chapter one, “Indian Camp”. Nick is a innocent young boy who travels with his father and his uncle George to an Indian reservation, where his father shows him the way of life. As the novel progress we see Nick mature, he changes from a innocent young boy following his father to an adult who is starting to have relationship problems with his girlfriend Marjorie. Not only do we see Nick mature, but in the novel The Old Man and the Sea, we see Manolin mature with the help of Santiago. Manolin is a young adolescent boy much like Nick, he is Santiago’s devoted apprentice. Santiago takes Manolin under his wing at a young age of five. Santiago being a older male with a lot of knowledge of the sea and his craft teaches Manolin all he knows. We see Manolin mature throughout the story due to the assistance of Santiago.
