Meir Kahane once said: “No trait is more justified than revenge in the right time and place.” Revenge is something that humans take pride in and feel that they must obtain to even the playing field with someone who has disgraced them. In “The Cask of Amontillado”, revenge drives the main character to do something really bad. Although, once the main character has obtained revenge, the main character feels no remorse about his actions and feels better than he did before. In “The Cask of Amontillado” the main character, Montresor, is angry at one of his friends, Fortunato, for making fun of his family name. He decides that he must get revenge on Fortunato for making fun of him and devises a plan. Montresor takes advantage of Fortunato’s love for wine and lies to him by telling him that he has one of the finest wines there is down in his cellar. He tells Fortunato that he wants him to taste it by to see if it is Amontillado quality. He even goes on to tell him that if he is too busy to try his new wine he will ask his other friend who Fortunato sees inferior when it comes to tasting wine. Fortunato agrees to taste the wine and him and Montresor go back to Montresor’s house. Once they are there, they go down to Montresor’s wine cellar which is covered in some mineral that makes Fortunato become sick. Montresor offers to turn back but Montresor insists that they push on. During their journey through their catacombs, they pass many corpses of deceased members of the Montresor family. As they walk, Fortunato asks what the Montresor family motto and coat of arms is. Montresor describes the coat of arms a a foot crushing a serpent. Montresor then recites the motto in Latin: “nemo me impune lacessit”, which translates to: no one attacks me with impunity. Sometime in their journey Fortunato makes a hand motion that is a sign of the Masons. Montresor does not recognize the sign but claims that he is a stonemason. Fortunato asks for proof that Montresor is a mason and he shows him his trowel that is proof that he is a mason. They continue on through the catacombs and finally reach a crypt. The crypt is covered in human bones on three of its walls. The bones of the fourth wall are scattered on the ground. Montresor
