Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson begins with an eight year old protagonist named David Charleston as he accompanies his father to the bank. The visit looks normal, until the Epics show up (pg 7). David then proceeds to watch his father die at the hands of Steelheart, a superhuman Epic with massive destructive powers and invincibility. However, David saw Steelheart bleed and he is set on revenge (pg 20). The main theme of Steelheart is mainly David’s quest for revenge, but the novel also tackles the idea that power corrupts. Although the setting is a post-apocalyptic Chicago, Sanderson stresses hope and determination. We also see a tiny theme of forgiveness through David’s adventure, as he grows from hating all Epics to believing that some of
The theme is reflected through the people in the book, and events that take place in the
The theme of the novel is Michael Vey and his friends have to save Jade Dragon (a girl with powers) from the Elgen. This was demonstrated when Michael was told by the Resistance Leader he had to go on a mission to save Jade Dragon. He new his life was at risk, but was willing to risk it for the human race. The theme wasn’t found until later in the book, towards the middle. Another theme was rescuing his friends from the compound the Elgen was holding them. On the mission, the Elgen captured most of his friends, including Michael himself. Michael then set out a plan to escape with all of his friends (which he
The novel Hero by Mike Lupica tells about a young boy named Zach Harriman realizing he has special powers and that there are people out in the world trying to make him turn over to the bad side, the people that use their powers for harm and not for the good cause. Zach's father, Tom Harriman, died a few months before Zach knew he was unlike others. His father worked as a special advisor to the President of the United States, doing secret operations for the President. His father was killed in a plane crash, and at the crash site the unusual thing was that no bodies were found. Zach begins to think that his father's death was no accident but murder. His father used to tell him bedtime stories of the Bads and the Good of how the used to fight
Another theme expressed in act 1, was anger, specifically with the soldiers vs the civilians. For example, Act 1, scene 2, there is an argument between a WWII Veteran and a common hippie. The veteran says things like “Don't you curse at me, you punk! I'm an American, not some dope-smoking flower child who's nothing but a coward.” (act 1, scene 2). This line expresses the anger from the soldier has for people, like the hippie, not being brave enough to stand up and fight for America. The hippies believing everyone should be peaceful with one and never have any problems with the rest of the world is something that isn’t realistic to the soldier, and that’s why he was angry- you have to fight of it and stand your ground.
One theme in the book is to think before you act. The hero archetype is the character who is trying to accomplish something, and the shadow is the character who tries to stop him. “When it was just about to burst into flames. They lifted it out and raised it high in the air, then they drove it, with all their strength, into the Cyclop’s one, enormous eye. ”(39)
In the book, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini was majorly obsessed with vengeance throughout the end of the book that his life was consumed by the quest for it. Louie felt as if the Bird had stolen his dignity at the POW campsites, where he was beaten, humiliated, starved, and stripped of his powers of self-defense. Louie was overwhelmed with his anger that the only objective he sought was to get revenge on the Bird. In other words, Louie was angered about his loss of dignity at the POW campsite, he wanted to get revenge on the Bird by killing him, and how Louie eventually forgives the Bird for what he did to him. These three reasons show how Louie’s loss of self-dignity in the POW camp was pursued.
The most obvious of the themes is that of violence, brutality, and torture. Tied into this also is the idea of injustice. Many of these themes are intertwined. Constantly the reader is berated with violent images, or descriptions of violence. These must be on nearly every second page of the novel. A good
The first theme, “war cannot change who a person really is at their core,” recurs during several incidences which reinstates the significance. For example, Ben tries to make Ringer smile despite being in the midst of the end of the world. When Cassie and Sammy reunite, he goes back to his five-year-old self despite his being in boot camp for months prior, and lastly, Cassie and Evan flirt
For the last and final essay of the semester, I decided to pick a couple themes that are included in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. Themes are a very important part of any story, play, poem, or any writing for that matter. It is important to understand what themes are involved in a story because it helps the reader better understand what is going on throughout it all. This novel has two main characters named Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. In essence, this story is about both of these characters coming together to solve the disappearance of Harriet Vanger that is over forty years in the making. Throughout their journey to solve the mystery, I came across a couple key themes. Regarding The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, there are a few themes I chose to write about including: violence against women, the topic of revenge, and isolation.
the series but there is one particular theme that stands out – “Resistance to Change and Rebellion.”
Hillenbrand, L. (2010). Unbroken: A World War II story of survival, resilience, and redemption. New York: Random House.
The theme of the novel is that your culture and background does defy you. In other words, being in a gang or group doesn’t mean you're not unique. For example, Ponyboy is in a gang/hood group “The Greasers” and does things like mug and snatch like the other members of the group, but this doesn't mean he doesn't have a different personality than the others. Another theme in the novel is the power of brotherhood. This is a sub-theme because it not confronted to the readers until the end of the novel. On page 176, Sodapop Curtis said, “ We ought to be able to stick together against everything if we don't have each other we don't have anything.” This quote struck out to me because throughout the
In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, there are many uses of theme. This book is about a man named Kino who finds the pearl of the world and wants to sell it to help out his family. Sadly, the pearl was meant to help out the family, but ends up destroying it because of greed. Steinbeck shows that materialism and greed can lead to immoral behavior through three main characters in the book: the doctor, the robbers, and the town as a whole. When the town hears that Kino found the pearl of the world, they all think of what they could do if they had the money.
The novella The Atonement by Ian McEwan produces a reoccurring theme of lost innocence. The children in the novella lose their childhood innocence after one wrongful accusation which tears the Tallis family apart. The setting in the novella develops the mood to be light and airy as the Tallis family resides in the English countryside. Nonetheless, the light and airy mood changes to one that is dark and full of mystery as the Second World War starts. Each character is tested by themselves and others to see if they can keep their innocence. But, each child grows further away from their childhood selves as their lies and misdeeds grow. With the use of literally devices McEwan shows how the loss of childhood innocence is harmful. The
