Theme Of Supernatural In Beowulf

The idea of the supernatural is very prevalent in Beowulf; describe three instances where supernatural beings or ideas come into play and what they add to the plot.

In the story of Beowulf there are three different references to supernatural beings. Grendel along with his mother portrays evilness and the other is a fire breathing dragon. In the beginning of the story the narrator describes Grendel to be feared among the town and very strong. As said in Beowulf “He was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain” (Beowulf line 19-21), Cain, known for being one of the earliest of evil, conceived Grendel showing just how evil he is . Though in his fight with Grendel’s mother he brings a sword,“My famous old sword stay in your hands, I shall shape glory with Hrunting” (Beowulf line 464-465), Beowulf knows that sword had no effect with Grendel and this shows that he believes Grendel’s mother is not at par in strength with Grendel. Underestimating Grendel’s mother and jumping in head first without thought, Beowulf is almost killed. This contributes to the plot because when Beowulf becomes King he does not recklessly jump into battle, “He said farewell to his followers” (Beowulf line 629). In a sense he humbles himself “I feel no shame, with shield and sword and armor, against this monster” (Beowulf line 635) he is more level headed in his future fights

Identify 3 elements of symbolism and describe how they contribute to the story

One of the major symbolisms in Beowulf is the mead hall ‘Herot’, this place is where most major events happen. When Grendel attacks Hrothgar’s men he knows that he is attacking a place of great importance. In modern English Herot is translated to heart, this also contributes to the fact that most main events happen in Herot: The battle with Grendel, Hrothgar celebrations, and the fact that it represents the achievements of the Scyldings.
