In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, the supernatural and the role it plays in motivating characters is present throughout the duration of the play. The supernatural causes conflict in the play and the prophecies from the witches in act one is the inciting action. The apparition, Banquos ghost, and the dagger are examples of how the presence of the supernatural causes conflict. The theme of the supernatural causing conflict in Macbeth plays an important role in the plot of the play.
The witches in Macbeth play a critical important role as at the beginning of the play the witches describe that all that is “fair is foul, and foul is fair” (Mac 1.1.10). Meaning that every thing that is pretty is ugly and everything ugly is pretty. The witches …show more content…

Similarly to many of the witches prophecies, it is worded in such way to steer Macbeth away from the true meaning of it. In this apparition, macbeth does not consider the children born of a section, which in shakespeare's time of writing the play was not considered a true birth and therefore the child was never truly born. Macbeth makes this mistake, resulting in thinking he would never be killed allowing him to go into battle naive and blindsided by the falsely interpreted proficy.
The ghosts that are presented in the play also cause a great deal of conflict. When macbeth sees the dagger in front of him in his soliloquy in act 2 scene 5 before he kills king Duncan, this is supernatural because he is seeing something that isn’t there. This causes conflict because this dagger ends up being the murder weapon that is used to kill Duncan. After they find king Duncan assassinated they are conflicted on why and who did it. They also have to find a new king to take a spot. After banquo’s is killed, macbeth has a dinner party and at the party he sees Banquo’s ghost sitting in his chair. Macbeth is frightened and is fighting with the ghost, this is supernatural due to it being a ghost and it caused a conflict between the two of them. In Mr. Polanski’s film, Macbeth he sees fleance put on his crown while macbeth is in bed.
