My essay will be on Wordsworth's poem, "I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud", which was originally published in 1807. The poem was revised twice and the version we have was finally published in 1815. (Wordsworth's Daffodils) According to, Wordsworth's mother died when he was seven and he was an orphan by age 13. He was sent off to boarding school, and upon completion he enrolled in St. John's College in Cambridge. Before his final semester of college, he set off on a walking tour of Europe, where he encountered the aftermath of the French Revolution. During his time in France, Wordsworth met and fell in love with Annette Vallon, who became pregnant, with his daughter. In 1793, after the declaration of war between France and England, he returned to England without his girlfriend and child. Upon his return to England, he was penniless and alone and these were some of the darkest times of his life. In 1795 he was reunited with his sister, Dorothy, and that is when his poetry took a turn from dark and gloomy to light hearted and jovial. (Encyclopedia Britannica) While I believe that the loneliness he experienced after his parents' death, the loss of his girlfriend and child were catalysts in the writing of this poem, it is believed that his sister Dorothy was actually the true inspiration.(Encyclopedia Britannica) In reading this poem I feel that Wordsworth' use of symbolism invokes feelings of both loneliness and hope.
