I have currently finished reading “145th Street Short Stories” by Walter Dean Myers. The theme in the collection of short stories is everyone has a part to play in life. In each story, there are themes that focus on different situations. A theme is the main topic that gives us the overall lesson of the story. The few characters that I'll be talking about in this essay are Peaches, Kitty, Monkeyman, Big Joe, and J.T. Kitty and Mack: This story's theme the fact that love can make you do crazy things. In the story, it shows how Kitty made an announcement, in front of her class, statting her love to him. After they decided to go out with each other, Mack gotten himself injured. Kitty got so depressed that she skipped school. This proves that love
Walter Dean Myers creates the story of sixteen year old Steve Harmon, from Steve’s point of view, as he struggles with the fact that he is being tried for felony murder. If he loses the case, the result could be the death penalty at worst, and at best, over twenty years in prison. Steve battles to prove his innocence and battle the prosecution with sheer determination. Day to day, Steve’s case seems to be going downhill. He only sees his family for short periods of time, and when he does see them they are faking their emotions to seem happy. While Steve is being held in Manhattan Detention Center, he finds himself living in fear. He describes how his look has changed, the terrible violence in prison, and the only time he can cry is when other
Walter Dean Myers, born Walter Milton Myers, was born on August 12th, 1937 and died on July 1st 2014. He was an American author for children’s book. He wrote over 100 books including picture books and nonfiction books. Two of his most famous books arguably if not his most famous books are Monster (1999) and Fallen Angel (1988).
The Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Steve Harmon is a black teenager who lives in Harlem. He is 16 and he went to jail for presumably being “guilty” but Steve knows he isn't guilty. Since the judge doesn't know Steve, instead of innocent until proven guilty, it could be the opposite. Guilty until proven innocent.
Walter Dean Myers is an African-American writer who is well-known for writing books for young adults with the main character being an African-American teenager going through struggles in their life. Myers name at birth was Walter Milton Myers, but was change to his current name when his mother died and he was given to Herbert and Florence Dean. He was two years old when his mother died and he moved from Virginia to Harlem when he was given to the Deans. When he was young, Myers had a speech impediment which led to teasing and him not doing well in school. He found solace in books and before he dropped out of high school, Myers English teacher told him to keep writing no matter what happened to him. After leaving the army he struggled in life
The first story I will be discussing is The Scarlet Ibis. Pride is a major theme throughout the entirety of this story. Pride is a major theme because, pride is what links the two main characters within it together. Brother is embarrassed by his brother Doodle. This theme is created through the story because the narrator feels these emotions towards his little brother Doodle, who has an unknown disability.
For one thing, the theme is shown all throughout the short story heavily. The clerk in the grocery store, Sammy, shares his every thought about the girls as they strut around the
There was many different themes in these stories, from friendship or independence, to perseverance or redemption. One theme that stuck with me, and could be found in a few of the stories we read, was the theme of shame. Shame can be found in a character’s actions and thoughts. There are many ways in which shame can be depicted, but I saw the overall theme in three of the stories we read in class.
These theme for my book are very good themes about the book. The themes help the reader know what the book is about. The characters in the book are important to the book because with out the characters the book would make no sense. Every book must have characters and themes to the book because without those two things there is no book. The three theme from the book talk very good about the book. They describe what Brian has to go through in order to survive the cold winter in the canadian wilderness. One theme tells us how lonely it is in the wilderness and how lonely Brian is and how he has no one to talk to but a skunk. So those are some of my theme and characters of my story brian’s winter.
The theme I chose was racism and how it takes a big part in the book. In the first chapter James lived in Suffolk Virginia with his mother Ruth They live in a neighborhood with all black people. Ruth rides her bike around and she often plays her piano. “When i was fourteen, my mother took up two new hobbies: riding a bicycle and playing piano.”
Monster by Walter Dean Myers has varied themes that the author wants the reader to take away after reading the novel. Monster is about a sixteen year old named Steve Harmon that was accused of felony murder. Harmon has never committed a crime before and the novel is his version of a movie script; the reader only knows what he writes down. Harmon has his own notes throughout the script and he describes everything that is going on while the trial goes on. Evidently, the theme for Monster is that telling the truth will depend on the future.
In conclusion, the three most important themes to me in the story, abuse, fear, and karma are what made the story so good. He abuses her, she has fear, that he pokes fun at, and he is punished for his actions. Her greatest fear saved her from enduring anymore abuse from
In the film, a painter named Chris makes art and he is attracted to the film’s femme fatale Kitty. Kitty and her real lover Johnny then decide to sell Chris’ art and say that it was Kitty’s so that the two of them would profit off of it. The plan ultimately fails when Chris discovers that he has been lied to about Kitty’s love and kills her out of wrath with Johnny being the one to blame for her death. The worst part about this is that Chris saw Kitty and his artwork as a chance for a new life away from his miserable one with his depressed wife and boring job. Another message that can be learned from this film is that some things in life are just too good to be true.
Bontemps uses all of the themes in his story to show the hard life of African American sharecroppers in the 1930’s. The themes that Bontemps put in the story are helplessness, love, and dedication. Bontemps puts each theme in in the story to get the readers to understand the rough life of a African American sharecropper.
The theme is the moral of the story, or the lesson that the author is trying to convey to his or her audience; however, the most important part of any book is definitely the characters. Characters help the story move along and create the whole idea of good and bad. The characters are the people or animals, or even objects that live the action that has been written. The Color Purple by Alice Walker includes characters, to which my personal favorite would have to be Nettie.
In this story, the narrator gives us the important clues that lead us to the theme by letting us know what the characters think. For example, when the Jerry's mother says "Of course he's old
