High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game

What’s scarier? Learning that the murder previously put in jail is returning to your town, or that you’re trapped on an island where the only other people hunt men for sport? High Noon, written by Carl Foreman, is a film about a marshal who has to protect his town from a gang of criminals. “The Most Dangerous Game,” written by Richard Connell, is a story about two hunters, one who hunts animals, and one who hunts men. High Noon and “The Most Dangerous Game” are two very different stories, including differences between the themes; but there are similarities as well, including the setting and characters. If I wish to hunt, why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships—lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels—a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them." (Connell 13). The theme in “The Most Dangerous Game” is that men are not created equal. Zaroff believes there are two types of men, strong and weak. The strong men have all the power, and they have the right to take the lives of weak men. The sailors from tramp ships—lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels, are the weak men. “I can’t believe I’ve heard some of the things that’ve been said here. You all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Sure, we pay this man, and he was the best marshal this town ever had. And it ain’t his trouble, it’s ours. I tell you if you don’t do what’s right, we’re going to have plenty more trouble.” (Foreman 314). The theme in High Noon is that all people have a responsibility to society. The people in Hadleyville have been protected by Kane for many years, and now they should help him by killing Frank. After sending him away once, the people should repay him. The protagonists in both the film and story made both thrilling and exciting. Even though they are two very different people, they have some interesting similarities. The settings in both stories give crucial parts of the plot to the story. They are very similar, and give advantages and disadvantages to the characters throughout the film and story. Like the film and story themselves, the themes of the stories are quite different.
