Have you ever felt guilty or betrayed? In the books Oedipus Rex and The Kite Runner there are many examples of these themes. For example in The Kite Runner Amir betrayed Hassan. In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus betrays the city. The significance of betrayal and guilt in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner is doing the right thing. Betrayal and guilt is portrayed in Oedipus Rex is a little different. It is also doing the right thing, but with some sort of punishment. Both authors treat the theme, guilt and betrayal, with the same amount of importance. Amir has betrayed Hassan in The Kite Runner. Amir betrayed Hassan before by not reading him the right words to the books he read Hassan, but that wasn’t the worst time. Amir betrayed him even worse, which ruined their friendship. On page 71, the book says, “I heard the voices again, louder this time, coming from one of the alleys. I crept close to the mouth of the alley. Held my breath. Peeked around the corner. Hassan was standing at the blind end of the alley in a defiant stance: fists curled, legs slightly apart. Behind him, sitting on piles of scrap and rubble, was the blue kite. My key to Baba's heart.” Then later on page 75 it told us how Hassan got raped in that same alley. Amir betrayed Hassan at this point because Hassan always stood up for Amir, but at this moment, the moment Hassan needed Amir to do something, he did not. He just watched. The guilt eventually caught up to Amir. The guiltiness officially started on page 88
Then I knocked on Baba’s door and told what I hoped would be the last in a long line of shameful lies.” (The Kite Runner page 104). Amir chose to try and get Hassan kicked out because he couldn’t bare the guilt he felt when he looked at him.
He never stood up for Hassan, always treating Hassan like he is no one important. Here is a quote about how Amir just watched Hassan get raped and did nothing to help him. Never stopped them from doing that to him. “I felt paralyzed. I watched them close in on the boy I’d grown up with, the boy whose harelipped face had been my first memory.” [Amir Pg. 76]. In this scene of the book this is where Hassan is getting raped by Assef. Amir is doing nothing to stop Assef and his friends from raping Hassan in the alley way. This show that Amir was scared to stop Assef from hurting Hassan. It shows that Amir was only thinking of himself and how Hassan desevers it, that he had it coming for him. When Amir and Hassan got home Hassan when straight to his room. A few weeks when by and Ali started to worry about Hassan because after he had made Amir breakfast and iron his clothes for school, Hassan would go back to bed. Ali ask Amir what happened the night of the kite fight tournament. Amir had the chance to tell Ali what happened that night but he kepted it to himself and never told
In the book the kite runner Amir betrays Hassan when he watches Hassan being abused by Assef. When Hassan is confronted by Assef he wants the blue kite but Hassan will not give it up. Assef Abuses him instead and Amir just hides in the corner and then runs away instead of helping Hassan.“I ran because i was a coward” (Hosseini)(pg82). This quote proves betrayal because this
It is amazing how two literary works from different time periods and different cultures can portray the same theme. A major theme in both The Kite Runner and Oedipus Rex is the limits of free will. The way Khaled Hosseini portrays the theme in The Kite runner is the way that the majority of Pashtuns treat the Hazaras, they are either treated as objects that people can do whatever they want with, they are treated as second class citizens or they are servants to the Pashtuns. In Oedipus Rex, the way that the theme is portrayed is that Oedipus is bound to a prophecy that he heard when he was a child.
“Who am I?” This has become the essential question asked in each literary work The Kite Runner and Oedipus Rex. Striving to find who they are the characters, Oedipus and Amir, try to figure out what they have become through their separate journeys. Most of their conclusions rely on the fact that both characters continue to look back into their past. The constant theme in both the novel and the tragedy is continuously looking into the past. Both characters constantly look at the past in ways such as their relationship with their father, the wrong choices they have made, and the secrets that lie in the family.
The backbone of the novel The Kite Runner is Amir’s betrayal of Hassan. It gives a reader the perspective of a young mind forced to make decisions and most of them were not the correct. Amir betrayals of Hassan include being a false friend, choosing to be a bystander when Hassan is raped, and his actions to get Hassan to leave.
Themes are one of the most important parts of any form of literature. In these two works, the general theme of sin and forgiveness is shown. In Oedipus Rex, the
Amir betrays Hassan in a way that will affect Hassan for the rest of his life. Amir becomes a coward in a tough situation that Hassan is in. On page 77 Aamir turns away when Hassan is being raped in an alley; Amir thinks “ I could step into that alley , stand up for Hassan -the way hed stood up for me
Amir breaks Hassan’s trust in this story multiple times but Amir stays loyal to him through it all. Amir sees the assault of Hassan, but fearing the confrontation of the bullies, he does nothing. I saw this as an act of betrayal where even Amir recognizes himself that he is not loyal to Hassan. I even see that it affected him on his road to adulthood also. However, Amir seemed not to be disturbed with his actions until the kite incident happened.
Just like The Kite Runner, in Oedipus Rex a theme of betrayal is portrayed. The main character, Oedipus, kills his own father in the beginning of the tragedy. Not only is killing someone you are close to considered a huge act of betrayal, but killing your own father is just one of the most ultimate acts of betrayal one can produce. Since Oedipus Rex is a short play, any action can be major and play a big part in the mood of the work. The killing of his own father happens right in the beginning and still occurs to be the major event in the play which causes the theme of betrayal to be prevalent throughout the whole thing. As the play comes to an end, Oedipus ends up finding out about his father and mother. Even at the end, Oedipus ends up betraying himself. He stabs his own eyes out after realizing all the horrible things he has done. “He lifted them and struck the sockets of his own eyes, shouting
Everything in life happen for a reason and there is nothing that can change the past. Events that have happened in the past tend to influence the future. In The Kite Runner hassan gets rapped as a young child when his best friend could have helped prevented it, but then his best friend Amir feels guilty and tries to make it up to him. In Oedipus Rex Oedipus is told he will murder his father and marry his mother and does this without knowing and he tries to prevent this but cannot. Both The Kite Runner and Oedipus Rex display the theme of fate throughout both stories while using it in different ways and the significance of the theme in both stories is different too.
According to a poll taken by The Washington Times, 52% of Americans believe in fate. (Harper 1). Many people trust in destiny because it is a way to believe that when they're brought upon an arduous decision, there result is already destined to happen whether they made the right or wrong choice. In the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and the play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles they both challenge their characters through unfavorable decisions that in the end are already planned out by fate. The prevalent theme of fate in Oedipus Rex and The Kite Runner expresses a quote said by Tony Robbins, “ It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped”(Anderson 1).This quote can ultimately explain by which the characters change from beginning to end due to their fate, how they dealt with their understanding of their fate, and the possible result by which their fate didn’t occur.
So how can some books have sensitive topics like rape, death, or murder in them? Books like The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Oedipus Rex by Sophocles catch the audience’s attention with their exciting thrills. The Kite Runner is mainly about a betrayal of Amir’s close friend/half brother, who was later murdered which led to him watching over his son when he passes. While Oedipus Rex is about trying to change a prophecy and trying to convince that he does not kill his father and to then marry his mother, but in the end the prophecy stayed the same and those events occur. As the books The Kite Runner and Oedipus Rex establish a common theme, validate the author’s treatment of the theme, and its significance it serves a purpose to the reader.
Oedipus Rex is a play that depicts the life of a king, Oedipus, who has the task of revealing the late kings murderer. Once he deciphers this mystery, Oedipus is shown his fate and relinquishes in guilt. What Oedipus finds out is that he had no idea who he really is and this ends up being the same for Amir. The Kite Runner is a story about a boy named Amir who lives in Afghanistan and his journey throughout life. He goes through life with unknown betrayals and the chance for redemption.
Amir is an unpopular character for many reasons, but he is most disliked for his actions in regards to Hassan, the innocent cinnamon roll that he is. the two main things he does to betray Hassan are when he does not stand up and protect Hassan against Assef's sexual assault, and false accusations against Hassan for theft. the sexual assault, which takes place at the end of chapter seven, was even more heartbreaking because amir, who had been there hiding for most of the confrontation contemplating what was more important, saving Hassan from the sadistic hands of Assef and possibly losing the kite, or doing nothing and getting the kite, but letting Assef hurt Hassan. Amir, unfortunately, chose to betray Hassan and leave him in the clutches of Assef, rationalizing that the kite will make his father even prouder of him, and therefore earning his 'love.' After this, Amir
