More than 97% of people that live on the reservation have a income of $2,600 a year. Which is probably due to the poor living conditions and no jobs on the reservation. The Sioux as you can see still have problems even today. The book Saga of the Sioux was to inform us all about the Sioux. In the book it tells you all about the struggles the Sioux had. The theme of the book was keep your word. In the nonfiction novel Saga of the Sioux, there are two major conflicts. Therefore the Indians did not have to fight very hard to win their war because the white men thought they were scared so they took it easy on the Sioux. “Edmonds and Sibley handed out blankets, molasses, and crackers with other presents to the indians they visited, and they had no problem signing the treaty that was presented.” Edmonds and Sibley had said that they would sign the treaty and hand out gifts of encouragement. Therefore they kept their word and did a good deed. “Through it all, Red Cloud refused to interfere.” Red cloud did not interfere one time during the war, he kept his word. In this novel the themes are kept present the entire way through. Saga of the Sioux was made to inform you about the struggles of the Sioux. “... amounts of gold were hidden in Paha Sapa, the Black hills.” The miners invaded the Sioux’s land, they came in search for the treasure. “ The army had already brought in troops to fight.” Soldiers came to their land to fight with the Sioux they even came with troops that were willing to risk their life to kill the Sioux. “Lincoln orders 39 Sioux to be executed.” The government was always trying to take out the Sioux even if it was 39 at a time. The government wanted the Sioux’s land so they killed till they got it. This novel is in 3rd person and it is nonfiction. “What they did….” this shows that it was written in 3rd person. In American Indian Stories, University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London edition, the author, Zitkala-Sa, tries to tell stories that depicted life growing up on a reservation. Her stories showed how Native Americans reacted to the white man’s ways of running the land and changing the life of Indians. “Zitkala-Sa was one of the early Indian writers to record tribal legends and tales from oral tradition” (back cover) is a great way to show that the author’s stories were based upon actual events in her life as a Dakota Sioux Indian. This essay will describe and analyze Native American life as described by Zitkala-Sa’s American Indian Stories, it will relate to Native Americans and their interactions with American societies, it will
For the Lakota Indians, stories were passed down through the generations as a way of teaching lessons. Their creation story places an emphasis on maintaining a balance between man and nature. This balance was broken for the Indians when, after violating the Dawes Act, a treaty that gave them full rights to their sacred land, white men pushed them out of their homeland and forced them into a society that they never wanted to be a part of. In doing this, their culture was greatly diminished, along with their hope of a better future. Today, the Lakota Indians face poverty and other challenges that all stem from a time when their rights were violated, peace broken, and stories forgotten.
"My People the Sioux" is a good literary work written in 1928. This book leaves an everlasting impression with some because it definitely intensifies the sympathy for the Indians. Luther Standing Bear, also known as Plenty Kill, portrays the dramatic and traumatic changes about the Sioux throughout their traditional way of life. As a young boy growing up, he experienced many of these hardships first hand between his people and the whites. This autobiography is quite valuable as it helps allow us to envision what really happened in the battling times of the Indians. Luther stated this quote, which to me, is unforgettable and very well said. It reads:
The Narrative was a very interesting Article explaining the Trail of Tears through the point of view of a white privileged soldier. He first explain his personal relationship with the Cherokee how his relationship with then connected him to the atrocity. This also falls into comparison with the ideological mindset of Eurocentric soldier this one different soldier was purposely used within the context of the narrative to appeal to the reader’s moral and ironic symbolism of what the soldier meant. He explained the events taking place post extraction because he was the messenger in which they spoke from, with having talent of speaking to them in their native tongue, witnessed the doom of the Native Cherokee Indians being taken from the village and into the Trail of Tears. He then slants the entirety of his narrative by expanding the psychotic images he saw since he was so close to the Indians he understood the true horror of the incident. So this article
In his story “The Lakota Way; Joseph Marshall III adequately convinces the reader to persevere through a series of stories that allows the reader to develop a personal connection with characters. Marshall achieves this by informing the reader and using formal diction. This allows his readers to experience how perseverance can have a positive impact on one’s life. Marshall teaches us that Perseverance represents a quality in human beings that allows us to be steadfast despite the difficulty. In the folk tale “The Story of the Giant,” perseverance is abundant; Marshall utilizes the skill of teaching to persuade his audience to persevere through the story. Marshall‘s unique way of writing allows the reader to take lessons from a story and influence them to use it in their own lives. From lya the giant terrorizing people to Indians having to leave their land because of the government to Marshall’s grandfather’s stories of hardship, Marshall shows his audience how the Native Americans have always had it rough but more importantly how they persevered.
It gives perspective on the side of the American Indians. The source was limited, because it was very biased towards the side of the American Indians, and does not let the reader come to their own conclusion.
The story begins with background of John Ridge and how he came to be a factor in the Cherokee nation. The upbringing of Ridge was an important aspect and where he went to school also played a role. Ridge’s life was assimilated to the white American culture; he even married a white woman from New England. It’s important to know this when you try to understand why he would sign the treaty. The book focuses on major events happening at the time and how it will affect the Cherokees and then switches to what will John Ridge do with his own home, like accepting many white ways, but not accepting Christianity. It also mentions the actions of other nations like the Creek and Choctaw, and how they reacted to the whites. During the reading, you begin to see that the Cherokees
Colonist are known for attempting of genocide to the Native American people, but failed due to the diligence and resourcefulness tribes just like the Sioux. According to Dr. Gagnon, author of Culture and Customs of the Sioux Indians, the Sioux tribe had only existed for seven hundred years. Some had lived in the Woodland areas while others lived in the prairies of Minnesota. Many of these groups vary from historical experiences and different dialect due to the separation of the tribe but they all remained under the same tribal name. The text provides a chronology time line that starts around 10,000 years ago with ancestral Sioux living in the Appalachians probably near Kentucky or Ohio. Ancestral Sioux are descended from Paleo-Indians, who entered into North America millennia ago. They migrated around 1300 AD to northern Minnesota then in 1500AD the Proto-Sioux become the Sioux. Around the mid-1800s the free nomadic way of life for the Sioux came to an end. As for Standing Rock reservation, located in south central North Dakota and in north central South Dakota, there are two different forms of origins for
Our nation’s history has been deep rooted in the conflict involving Native Americans, ever since the beginning of America and it is one hard to get rid of even as the days go by. The impact of colonialism can be seen in Native American communities even today, and it can only be understood through a cultural perspective once you experience it. Aaron Huey, who is a photographer, went to Pine Ridge reservation and it led him to document the poverty and issues that the Sioux Indians go through as a result of the United States government’s long term actions and policies against them. One must question all sources regarding these topics because there is a lot of biased and misinformation about Native American struggles, and sometimes schools do not thoroughly teach the truth so students can get an insight. There are also different sociological perspectives in this conflict, along with many differing opinions on how to approach the problem and deal with it. This is where ideas clash because people believe their views are right regarding how to handle it.
The Lakota Way, stories and lessons for living, is a book written in 2001 by Joseph M. Marshall III. Marshall dedicates his book to Kimberly Jo Schumidt and Joseph N. Marshall II. The stories he tells through out his book are those that have been passed down from his family about the Lakota’s and their virtues. Marshall’s stories are based on morals and virtues.
By 1876, gold had been discovered in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The gold was found on Sioux land, and this region was considered sacred to the Lakota Sioux Indians. The he land was to be protected and respected by the United States Army, because of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 18681, but the Army could not keep miners off the Sioux ground, which led to the increase of Sioux grievances towards the Americans; some grievances that are still taken offense to today. These battles and negotiations soon were known at the Great Sioux War of 1876.
The movie, filmed in 2007, depicts the lives of the Sioux Indians as if they were not a people that mattered. In the movie, they say, “the Indians lived like the poorest of whites.” They were pushed around and told repeatedly they could not stay on their own land. This was due to the Westward Expansion in the United States at the time. By 1876, most of the American Indians had already been forcibly relocated to reservation land. Red Cloud, a Sioux leader, settled with some of his tribe on the Sioux Reservation of the Dakota Territory and took the aid of the US government. When this happened, other Sioux leaders, such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, saw it as a surrender. These leaders refused to assimilate and went on to live life in their traditional way. Unfortunately, this all changed when the US found gold on Sioux land in the Black Hills. The movie tells the story of the Sioux Indians fight to try to remain in control of their own lives and stay on their own land. Then when they no longer can, the movie shows their path to surrendering to the whites and assimilating into the American culture.
The entire Native American population’s journey from the eastern part of America to Western America is one that is over simplified and easily forgotten. This issue was brought up several times throughout the first three chapters. The trail of tears is a topic of discussion that so often buried in the history of Early America. However, it is arguably one of the most influential events to ever happen in America. I say this because as I read Living in the Land of Death it was evident that there was a passion, and despite the odds, there will to succeed that Choctaw people possessed. The cultures of the Choctaw people had to be defended and upheld because if they had not worked to preserve them, then in a world that did not want them they would have literally had

Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian captures the life of Junior, a young boy who lives on the Spokane Indian Reservation in poverty. Junior describes the unique experience of killing his own dog because of his family’s financial status through a bitter and helpless tone. This tone appeals to the audience’s feelings of compassion and guilt towards Junior’s life in order to demonstrate what life can genuinely be like in poverty as an Indian on the Reservation.
