Throughout history, women have had to work very hard for their rights. Millions of women organized marches, petitions, and risked their health and safety to gained women rights. Before women stood up for themselves, they were thought as “dead” to others. Also, women couldn’t vote, they lacked many job opportunities, and received a low wage compared to men. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and even Adrienne Rich, the author of this poem, fought for women to gain all of these rights. The poem “Diving into the Wreck” was written during the time where women were continuously fighting for their rights. Throughout the poem, “Diving into the Wreck”, the feminist perspective was thoroughly explained using symbols, conflict, and irony. In the poem “Diving into the Wreck”, there were two different types of conflicts that helped explain the feminist perspective. One of the conflicts was character versus society. Throughout the poem the society didn’t believe in what the author was doing to help women and instead she had to fight on her own. This was seen as a conflict because it was an argument against her and the rest of the society and caused her to have to fight on her own. Another conflict was character versus self. During the poem the author was always making a difficult decision. She had to decide whether to to fight even with the consequences that could be ahead.
