Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud are both widely known respectively for their natural selection and psychoanalytic personality theories. Charles Darwin helped further the field of evolutionary psychology while Sigmund Freud helped discover the unconscious which is still debated to this day about whether it is real. Darwin’s natural selection theory talks about how organisms adapt to survive and the two types of sexual selection which is intersexual and intrasexual selection. Freud’s theory of psychoanalytic personality talks about how the id, ego, and superego affects our behavior and talks about how our unconscious is a very important aspect in our lives. Those that survive these forces, passes it on to their offspring and increases their survivability during these conditions while those that don 't survive these forces, dies off and their genes don 't pass off to future generations. These things listed above regarding natural selection shows that organisms adapt to survive. Darwin also proposed that there are two types of sexual selection which is intrasexual competition and intersexual selection. Intrasexual competition is when two of the same species that is of the same sex go against each other and the winner has a higher selection of mates. Usually the winner has better qualities that help increase survivability. They pass their genes on to future generations which helps increase survivability over the whole species eventually. Intersexual selection is when mates are chosen because of the certain qualities that an organism is looking for. Species with the characteristics desired tend to mate more which means most of those genes carry over to future generations. Genes tend to slowly disappear from the species if they don 't mate as often. The psychoanalytic personality theory is composed of three structures of the mind: the id, ego, and superego. According to Freud, we are born with the id and is where all our urges and drives occur. We just want whatever we want and want it right then and there. This is called the pleasure principle.
According to Darwin (Date), there is no fundamental difference between man and the higher mammals in their mental and perceived emotional faculties. In theory, every organism is engrained with complex, useful, and non-arbitrary bits of information that is essential to its survival. Organisms know when it is time to migrate, when it is best to hunt, and when mating should occur. Evolutionary psychologists therefore look for a theoretical combination of all the different scientific disciplines examining human’s behaviours and beliefs under this biological "view of a single, universal panhuman design" (1992). Therefore, evolutionary psychology can be described as a new theory based hypothesis that combines the current principals of psychology with the main principals of evolutionary biology (Buss, 1996). This study will critique evolutionary theory under the subsequent headings.
Lifespan development is a scientific approach to questions about growth, change, and stability in physical, cognitive, social, and personality characteristics at all ages from conception to death (Feldman, 2014 Seventh Edition). In reading the chapter I found three theories very interesting evolutionary, cognitive, and psychodynamic. The reason I find evolutionary perspective because I feel as though this perspective or theory is the base of study. When we are born we have genetic make-up for two people with two family trees. The blending is sometimes a hard transition. We all have been around child and seen their parents’ characteristics in the child. Evolutionary perspective attributes to the genetic inheritance from our ancestors, contending that genes determine not only traits such as skin and eye color, but certain personality traits and social behaviors (Feldman, 2014 Seventh Edition). We all see and new edition in a family and sit and try and pick out which parent the child looks like. We are a very diverse place. The traits and genetic studies are a constant for new developments and updated current practices. Education on social norms of new populations are a must. As we learned throughout history change is a shock. We need to educate and adapt to the societal new comers. Although Charles Darwin is usually just looked at in the light of purely biology, his work that impacted other fields such as psychology or his work that lead to the rapid expansion of certain fields such as ethology, is often looked over. Darwin’s work impacted these fields both directly and indirectly at such a level of influence that some people believe that psychology should be looked at as pre- and post-Darwin. On the Origin of Species, while being primarily about biological phenomena and theories, was one of these works that impacted psychology indirectly. Other than giving a new perspective for psychologists to possess when contemplating different ideas, Darwin’s work on natural selection lead to the creation of evolutionary psychology.
The person I am writing about is experiencing troubles with their thoughts and behavior. Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler are well-known and respected men in the world of psychology. Both their theories involved the study of the human mind. Freud believed that much of the human instinct was sexually based and that many problems they suffered were due to this instinct. Freud concluded that his patients' memories reached back to childhood and that many of the repressed experiences they recalled concerned sexual issues.
