Theory of Aging
Our youthful- oriented society has given the aging an impression of being in an unpleasant phase of life. Although work retirement is celebrated for freedom to travel and pursue a hobby, many people realize that those extra times serve to make them look into the reality of aging closely. As a matter of fact, physical limitations, discovery of diseases, role confusion, and boredom are some of the experiences retired people reported (L. Saprid, personal communication, March 12, 2017). With personal faith, enhanced mind-set, and careful planning, I believe a healthy outlook and process of aging can be achieved.
The topic of aging cannot be further discussed without including physical infirmities or death. After all, decline in physical health and functioning happen

With a personal belief on purposeful living, I can focus on those areas that matter in life and please my God – service to my families, loved ones, and others. To me, it is a daily discipline of the mind and spirit. In a way, having an enhanced mind releases me from the tendencies to pursue power, money, and material gains that often lead to stressful living.
Finally, a careful planning for aging can assist a person to view aging positively. The planning process starts with taking care of my physical health – healthy habits on eating, sleeping, and exercise. Moreover, financial planning is also important to save for future financial needs to avoid being a burden to my children. This can include having a retirement savings, life insurance, and a living will. Furthermore, to be realistic, simplifying the home structure for safety and easy maintenance can also be considered.
The prevalence of ageism can affect the aging people negatively. However, a person’s faith, enhanced mind, and shrewd planning can prepare a person to age gracefully and accept the aging process
Aging is very complex and highly individualized process which begins at conception and end with death. Variables such as physical or cognitive impairments, socioeconomic aspect, cultural values, and beliefs make an aging process unique to each individual. I interviewed an elderly woman using a set of guided questionnaires on the topic to further explore her aging experience. For the purpose of this assignment, I will refer to the client interviewed as a D.L., a changed name for a reason of privacy and confidentiality. During the interview, we explored a D.L. strategy to stay healthy, significant accomplishments of her life, hobbies and activities, retirement, and finally the goals for the future.
Successful aging is a complicated and multifaceted concept that varies contextually among individuals, disciplines, and even time. Gerontologists have traditionally considered a person to have aged successfully upon having reached old age with their physical health, mental well-being and spirit still intact. Ultimately, successful aging is a matter of personal perspective, largely influenced by an individual 's values and experiences. Even those within America 's elderly population hold conflicting perspectives on what it means to have aged successfully. A qualitative study published by Reichstadt and Sengupta titled Older Adults ' Perspectives on Successful Aging, concluded that “older adults viewed successful aging as a balance between self-acceptance and self-contentedness on one hand and engagement with life and self-growth in later life on the other” (Reichstadt, "Older Adults ' Perspectives on Successful Aging: Qualitative Interviews", pp. 567-575.)
The main definition of “aging successful” is said to be, “successful gaining includes three main components: low probability of disease and disease-related disability, high cognitive and physical functional capacity, and active engagement with life” (Rowe & Kahn, 433). The first component of low probability of disease-related disability does not only refer to the physical disease itself being present in the persons body, but also the severity of the risk of the factors of such disease(s). High cognitive and physical functional capacity depicts what the individual can do and not just what they do. Finally active engagement with life deals with how the individual interacts with others (interpersonal relations) and creating societal value without any return (productive activity) (Rowe & Kahn, 433). We are going to look into the lives of Roger Gentilehomme and Earl Blassingame and analyze if they are considered to be “aging well” based on variety of articles as well as personal opinion.
Aging and being old was dominated by negative characteristics and conditions such as illness, depression, and isolation for a long time (Eibach, Mock, & Courtney, 2010). At first glance the terms “success” and “aging” seem to be in conflict to each other. When asking people about aging, their answers have many facets that are also found in psychological definitions: successful aging is seen as health, maturity and personal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generativity, coping, and acceptance of age-related limitations. In the psychological sense successful aging is also often seen as the absence of age-associated characteristics (Strawbridge, Wallhagen, & Cohen, 2002). After spending an afternoon interviewing my elderly father-in-law, I gained insight into how he perceives the aging process and the impact on the quality of his life. First, and foremost he viewed aging in a very positive and healthy manner. He believes that a positive attitude assists in accepting physical and psychosocial changes and enjoyed the fact that he and his wife are both physically fit and cognitively alert. He felt confident that advances made in health care and the quality of their lives would continue to be empowering. This paper will give a brief overview of ageism and stereotypes associate with late adulthood. This will explain how health and wellness techniques in the late adulthood stages can mitigate the negative effects of aging. As researchers work to complete their studies, many find a reoccurring basis of successful aging.
