Empathy is a vital ingredient of supportive relationships. A lot of scholars argued that empathy furnishes health care professionals with the capacity to improve patient’s health ,thus it must be taught to make them more responsive to patient’s health [ Journal article: Developing Empathy in Nursing students:A cohort longhitudinal study page 1] In the video vignette, a paramedic was talking to the pregnant woman who may have had a stroke .Beside her is her worried husband who keeps on asking questions if the baby and his wife is in stable condition. The paramedic advised the husband that they do not know yet if it is really a stroke or how severe it is but assure that it will not affect the baby. I have observed that the majority of the healthcare professionals featured in the video introduced themselves first, like their first and last name followed by a statement which goes “I am here to help you, take care of you and make you feel comfortable”. A simple assurance statement yet makes a huge impact to not only to patients but also to their relatives. I have also noticed that each and every healthcare professional will explain in detail the procedures that they need to do and why they have to do it. From checking their blood pressure, checking pulse rate , temperature and the likes. Having this characteristic will not only help patients understand the situation , gain knowledge but also makes them feel at ease with the health care professional as they know that they

Empathy and caring is an essential part of human health. We love because we can empathize (Szalavitz & Perry, 2010). Empathy underlies everything that makes society work; such as altruism, collaboration, love and charity. Failures to empathize are a key part of social problems, such as crime, violence, war, racism, child abuse and inequity. Although we are genetically predisposed to care for others, the development of empathy requires a lifelong process of relational interaction (Szalavitz & Perry, 2010). More importantly, the first relationship humans experience, the

In this essay, I am going to give a structured reflective account on the development of a therapeutic relationship with a client on one of my clinical placements as part of my training as a student nurse. I will be using a reflective model which explores the processes involved in developing and maintaining such relationships bearing in mind theoretical knowledge and how it applies to this clinical experience. Jasper (2003) describes reflective practice as one of the ways that professionals learn from experience in order to understand and develop their practice. As a trainee health care professional, I have learnt the importance of reflection in
Empathy is to feel and understand someone else’s pain, nonetheless it is not as simple as it seems. Leslie Jamison’s essay, The Empathy Exam describes her experience as a medical actor while putting herself into the patients’ shoes by associating her background. Jamison exemplifies her story in an almost journal like form sharing each incident one by one and linking them together. She simply begins by elucidating the general knowledge of her occupation to involve the readers so they can understand her emotions and follow along attentively. Stephanie Phillips is the role she took upon for the exam and having experienced the same situations Jamison introduces the concern about empathy and what empathy truly is. She searches for her own personal definition of empathy and what it is like to have and want empathy throughout
