(1) There are many differences between sex, sexuality, and gender. Sex is simply someone’s biological and physical characteristics that classify them as male or female. Sex is determined by what sex organs someone has and their reproductive functions. Sex does not account for someone’s feelings of identity; rather just what body parts they were born with. Gender, however, is the social and psychological characteristics that are associated with being masculine or feminine. Gender is someone’s personal feelings of how they identify. Someone who identifies with the gender they have been assigned based on their sex is cisgender. Someone who does not identify with the gender they have been assigned is transgender. Agender people do not identify with any gender. There is a broad spectrum of genders because it is not limited to just two possibilities. Gender is really about how someone feels in context with their body and their personality. Sexuality is a person’s sexual orientation. Someone’s sexuality is defined by who they are attracted to. If someone is attracted to someone of the opposite sex, they are considered heterosexual, if someone is attracted to someone of the same sex, they are considered homosexual, and if someone is attracted to people of both sexes, they are considered bisexual.
