There were thousands of dead bodies lying cold and lifeless on the ground. This wasn’t how war was supposed to be. All of the teachers had told their students what being in the military was like, and this was not anything like they had described. The teachers had told them that if they were real men, they would honor their country by joining the military. Some men would think “How is it honoring my country, if I know that I will die?” Soon men would start to come back and tell classes what a real war is like. How you were always afraid of what might happen next. Young men in these classrooms would call those returning soldiers cowards. Later that day the car driver made a wrong turn. Luckily for Princip, he was on the same street. He was planning out his next move as he looked up and saw Archduke Ferdinand. As he pulled out his gun, the driver tried to reverse but the gears got stuck. Princip was locked onto his target. He shot multiple times. One bullet hit Ferdinand's wife in the stomach, killing the baby and herself. Another bullet hit the Archduke and killed him as well. Princip was arrested by the Serbian military. Austria-Hungary issued a formal diplomatic representation of their view, which was known as the July Ultimatum. This was used as pretext for Austria-Hungary's invasion of Serbia. This then led to WW1. Another cause of WW1 was the rise in Nationalism. Nationalism was a feeling that people had of being loyal to and proud of their country. It is the pride in ones country. For example, in Germany people wanted to be a real force in the world. People started to believe in their countries. When belief overcame a person they would often go to other countries and kill men (like Archduke Ferdinand was killed by Gavrilo Princip). When men would perform these actions, countries would get upset/mad and want revenge. Most countries in Europe had allies so if you made one country mad, you weren't just going to go to war with one country/military.
