How does it work?
Thermography is the use of thermograms to study heat distribution in structures or regions by forming an image using infrared radiation of objects. Infrared cameras operate in the wavelength range 750-14,000nm and any object above absolute zero emits radiation in this region. Thermography cameras can generally be divided into two types – those with uncooled detectors and those with cooled infrared image detectors. Cooled infrared image detectors are mainly used for research and scientific cameras whilst uncooled thermal cameras use a sensor operating at or close to the ambient temperature and are stabilized to reduce image noise. The lens focuses the infrared light emitted by all objects, which is scanned by an array of infrared-detector elements that created a detailed temperature pattern called a thermogram.

Engineering Applications?
Thermography has a wide range of applications from medical analysis, to military uses but is also particularly useful in material analysis. This technology can even be used to detect poor connections and internal damage in circuits, which can potentially lead to a fire starting. Furthermore this technique has a number of applications in condition assessment of structures, locating the source of distress, identifying moisture ingress and flow through pipes and assessment of damage potential in concrete and masonry structures.
