The secret life of bees by Sue Monk Kidd is the story of Lily Owens, fourteen years old young girl who suffers from the guilt of being responsible from taking her own mother’s life, and who runs away from her cruel and violent father to discover the secrets and the truths about her dead mother. The setting of the novel is in South Carolina in 1964, during a time where prejudice and racism was a huge problem between people. White racists were against the civil rights movement and they were very violent and disrespectful towards black people. Lily and her African-American housekeeper, Rosaleen, find a nice and a safe place to stay in Tiburon. They stay together in the Boatwright house. Boatwright family is consisted of three black sisters, named August, May and June. They work as beekeepers and they worship the black Mary statue along with the Daughters of Mary; a group of religious black women.
