There are several western African beliefs of spirits.the 4 religious beliefs are impersonal powers, spirit beings, divinities /god, and the supreme being.the impersonal are also referred as mystical, which can be used for both good and evil.These spirits can affect the human lives in either positive or negative ways. Dominant and pervasive are chateristics of impersonal powers. in African beliefs of spirit beings they cateogorized them by non human spirits and spirits of the dead. African culture worshiped more the deities than the high God. They tend to uplift deities as the high God. The spiritual theme plays important roles in the story Things fall apart. The African term of chi is referred as personal God, and this is also an example of impersonal powers. “Okonkwo did as the priest said. He also took with him a pot of palm-wine. Inwardly, he was repentant. But he was not the man to go about telling his neighbors that he was in error. And so people said he had no respect for the gods of the clan”(Chapter 4). Okonkwo obedience for the priest is a example of African religious beliefs of their deities rather than a higher God. “He told them that the true God lived on high and that all men when they died went before Him for judgment. Evil men and all the heathen who in their blindness bowed to wood and stone were thrown into a fire that burned like palm-oil. But good men who worshipped the true God lived forever in His happy kingdom”(Chapter 16). This example when the missionaries tried to convince okonkwo and everybody in the village of a true God and not a priest whom they seem to highly worship as the higher one.
