Masculinity shall not be undervalued. Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is mostly focused on the life of an insecure but powerful man named Okonkwo who is being haunted by the fear of failure and weakness. Okonkwo was an admirable, well-valued man. He is indeed very masculine (as he likes to be seen) and enthusiastic. He is a husband with three wives and the father of ten children; any man could have as many wives as he wants if he is able to provide for them. Okonkwo was a great warrior and a clan leader. As powerful as Okonkwo is, his fears are his greatest nemesis. He strives for greatness, but sadly he achieves emotional distress. He let his fears control his life; he uses weakness as an excuse to abuse his first-born son Nwoye. Okonkwo believes that Nwoye would turn out like his grandfather-weak, lazy and undervalued. He dedicates himself to teaching Nwoye about masculinity and the value of hard work. Okonkwo would make Nwoye work endless nights and days for him to learn the ways of life, to be precise the way he perceives life; he has a live-to-work and work-to-live mentality. Okonkwo stated “I will not have a son who cannot hold his head in the gathering of the clan. I would sooner strangle him with my own hand”.
