Society has drilled an image into our minds as people of how the role of each gender should be played out. There are two recognized types of genders, a male and a female. Most people come to think that gender is just male or female. Yet it has become more complex then that. Today it is not just that if you have male parts, you are a man, the opposite goes for women. There are difference between sex and gender, and as time passes they become better known. Sex is known as male or female. Sex refers to the biology, the differences of chromosomes and hormones; internal and external sex organs of individuals. Gender is known by the terms “masculine” and “feminine”. Gender refers to the characteristics of a society or culture that are defined as either masculine or feminine. Gender roles refer to the characteristics and behaviors that different cultures attribute to the sexes. The evolution of gender norms happens by culture and region, and over time, there has been less of an emphasis on biology so much to explain differences between men and women, just know society shapes different outcomes and expectations

The gender describes how our understandings and perception of differences between masculinity (what society deems appropriate behaviour a “man” and femininity (what society deems appropriate behaviour for a “woman”) are influenced.

Throughout many studies, researchers have said that gender develops from families, which is part of the social construction in children. According to Coltrane and Adams, Gender is defined as “To what it means to be a man or a woman in a specific time and place” (Coltrane and Adams). People in this world think that gender is automatically part of biological sex, but according to Coltrane and Adams, it is not a direct result of biological sex. The term is defined as “to refer relatively distinct biological differences between male and females such as genitals, hormones, and chromosomes” (Coltrane and Adams). For gender it is also social and it refers to how a person thinks that someone should look, act and feel (Coltrane and Adams). On the daily life, people will usually assume that a person “is” the gender that corresponds to his or her sex: females are feminine and males are masculine (Coltrane and Adams). In addition, gender also describes how the typical man and woman are supposed to present themselves. A man presenting himself as masculine and a woman presenting herself as feminine in particular cultures (Coltrane and Adams). In other words how women should act and how men should act.

The various cultures around the world all have this thing distinctively in common, and that is they all share their own expectations, especially when it comes to gender. It is well evident that there are set conformity standards with every culture, just as there are set standards with genders. There is no general way to characterize a man’s masculinity and a woman’s femininity just because a culture may influence certain expectations. With these cultural pressures we limit our identities drastically because we yearn to conform with the so called “norm” of the culture. We as people often tend to confuse biological characterics such as masculinity and femininity, and pressure them to become more of a social influence.

This was back in the day when a family was made up of a mother, a father, and their children. That is no longer the way it is anymore. Now days we have most moms working fulltime jobs and sometimes more that one job. Many of those moms might be single parents. In some families there are stay at home dads, too. The idea that a family is made up of a man and a woman plus their children is not even the way it is anymore. There are dads raising a family all on their own, and then there are families that are made up of same sex couples and their children. So the way we fill the roles in the family have changed a lot. Where the responsibility goes to is not so much depending on gender roles of the past. Who is to say that a man cannot do everything that was once thought to be woman’s work as far as roles in the family

Gender is the part of culture in which one identifies themselves as a male or female. This identity marker has drastically changed as genetically born women are identifying psychologically as men, men identify psychologically as women, or some undergo surgery to alter their gender. The United States values a masculine man, and he is the one who receives the most privileges. A feminine woman in the United States has been marginalized and historically has been less privileged.

This person pays attention to they way they dress, how their hair looks and their jewelry choices. They also love too cook. At work they were slacks and dress shirts and polo’s on the weekend. I have marked that Person B was assigned the sex of a male at birth. I have also marked that they are have not fully identified their gender identity. I think that this person is neutral on the feminine and masculine scale. They are all about their appearance, and loves to cook which leads to a more feminine side. They also like to wear more masculine clothing at work. To me I think this is a person who is androgynous. Androgynous is where one incorporates masculine and feminine qualities

On the website, Dictonary.com, Androgyny has five different meanings. Except for the botanic definition, they all refer to, “Being both male and female; hermaphroditic”, this being genetically or just characteristics one might show. Although, one who has been born with male and female physical body parts is also considered androgynous, this term is usually applied people

Androgyny is a term that was expressed by assembly two Greek words which are Andros means male and gyne means female Therefore, Androgyny was used to refer to a condition in which a person’s gender is not clearly defined (Harper 2015).

The term ‘gender’ was coined by John Money in 1955: “Gender is used to signify all those things that a person says or does to disclose himself/herself as having the status of a boy or man, girl or woman, respectively” (Coleman and Money, 1991, 13). In

Many men and women today are choosing to take on nontraditional gender roles. People are embracing their individuality and living their lives in a way that contrasts what many have been raised to believe. Regardless, in our society, the traditional roles of men and women in regards to the family have always been clear, the man goes to work and is the financial provider for the family while the woman stays at home, watches over the children and monitors the cleanliness of the house. However men and women have realized in recent years that both gender are capable of their opposites duties regardless of what society believes. A plethora of the population have began to break the “rules” of gender responsibilities and stereotypes.

Some people would say that gender is a black and white topic; either you have masculine or feminine traits. In our text it states, “Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women” (Rathus, Nevid, & Rathus, 2014, pg. 155). Having said this, what specific factors determine whether an individual is classified as masculine or feminine? From a scientific perspective, it has been proven that an individual’s genetic makeup entails whether or not they are a man or woman. The fault I see in this would be that even though I agree that genetic components can formulate an individual as either a man or woman, the gender of said individual
