Childish Gambino's video had 21 million views and counting in just a matter of 2 days. The music video takes place in an abandoned warehouse. Childish Gambino gives examples on how America deals with traumatic events happening everyday in society. Gun control, police brutality, racism, and murders are the major events being expressed throughout this video. In the beginning of the video it starts off by an african american man walking up to a guitar and starting to play it, it goes to then childish gambino dancing in a weird way. This is portraying Jim crow. Seconds later he shoots the guy in the back of the head. You see in the video that the gun is handled with care, but the body is dragged away without care. This shows how americans value guns more than human lives. During the whole video you see him dancing with a group of kids, they follow his every move. The dancing distracts you from all of the chaos in the background. This could be a symbolism by the youth not being involved with the news and just going on with their lives like its nothing major. Half way through the video there is a church choir happily singing and then Childish Gambino comes in starts dancing and smiling then seconds later he shoots them all up with an AK47. This represents the Charleston church massive shooting. Toward the end of the video you see Childish Gambino running for his life. He's running from a mob of all white people, why? Because he will always be running since he's seen as a “criminal”. Childish Gambino This is America music video is a real eye opener for some people because of the strong impacts and symbolisms it has in it. This video won't stop any of the problems in America but maybe it could be the start of something
This is relevant to economics in a few ways. First is the fact that in the beginning of the video it discussed the 2008 recession, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted over 700 points. This caused many
American Idiot by Green day includes “Don’t want a nation under the new media, One nation controlled by the media, Information Age of hysteria”(Green Day. American Idiot). Green Day explains that America is under a false impression that everyone follows. Americans will act like fools because they are controlled by the media. Green Day expresses that he felt misrepresented. This is America by Childish Gambino demonstrates a his views on America. “Grandma told me, Get your money, Black man”(Childish Gambino. This is America). Gambino includes this contradicting statement because African Americans face racial discrimination in the workforce, making it difficult to gain money. “Guns in my area, This is America”(Childish Gambino. This is America) He shows the violence in America in his music video. Listeners hear guns and the rage Gambino goes on using his gun to murder. NOW by Miguel includes several lyrics about discrimination. “Make it rain to keep them out, We only suffer what we allow, We are the sound of freedom, the black lives that we lost right now, Is that the look of freedom now?” (Citation). Miguel explains that America has lost several black lives to discrimination and we still face major discrimination in our country, and we need to change that. Green Day, Childish Gambino, and Miguel all demonstrate their political and
Gambino possesses an Obligatory God Complex; while many rappers, such as the aforementioned West see themselves as the undisputed greatest, Gambino seems to proclaim himself as the greatest merely because he feels he must. This is evident with “Why does every black actor gotta rap some/I don’t know, all I know is I’m the best one” from “Bonfire”. His issues also stem greatly from his childhood, addressed in “Outside”. His past is very different from those of many of his colleagues, due to a stable home life economically and emotionally. Many in his community “think that when you leave the hood you look down on them”, and his cousin serves as the embodiment of those who agree. As a result, Gambino constantly seeks approval from his cousin, arguing that “The truth is we still struggle on a different
There is a lot that goes into making this country work. Whether it be the coal that makes electricity to power our lights, to the cowboys who herd the cattle that becomes the beef that we eat regularly, there’s more to America than just big business. But we as Americans rarely think about these jobs, let alone respect them. Hidden America written by Jeanne Marie Laskas shines a light on these underappreciated jobs, and points out that these jobs are imperative to our economy, and deserve more respect than they receive.
Other people who look at the video just ignore it and say that ’s it’s just a video of a bunch of kids dancing. But you have to look deeper than what’s on the surface and that’s why so many people miss the meaning. Some of the hidden messages are ones that others find, but I think I have some of my own as well. In the beginning of the video, Gambino shoots someone in the head.
Throughout the song, Tupac gives an inside look on the social problems affecting African-Americans and suggests possible solutions. In the first stanza of the song, Tupac first talks about how certain social issues are linked together; he makes a correlation between his skin color and being poor. Tupac says “I'm tired of bein' poor and even worse I'm black.” Then he explains how poverty causes crime by saying “My stomach hurts, so I'm lookin' for a purse to snatch.” And finally, he demonstrates the relationship between police brutality and race by saying “Cops give a damn about a negro? Pull the trigger, kill a nigga, he's a hero.”
The video contain ethos when it tries to establish Brian Williams, it made a grown adult news caster, to a younger audience by making him look like he is rapping a song called “Gin and Juice.” Many people believe that grown adults, especially a news anchor on msnbc, will say words like “shit.” One phrase that people wouldn’t expect Brian William to say is, “Keep comin up with funky ass shit like every single day” (0.12). The video also contain pathos because the video will try to access of the viewers in their late twenties and / or early thirties humorous side. Since the song was a very popular song that was created in 1992, viewers that were a teenager during this time most likely will remember that song. As well the “Brian Williams Raps ‘Gin and Juice’” access viewers to our generation do to the simple fact it was a rap song. Throughout the whole video you see Brian William
Everything our country has to be thankful for is because of you. You fight for our rights, for our freedom. You are the foundation of our country. People may forget how privileged they are. They forget you risk your life. There is not many places in the world where men and women who they have never met will fight, with their lives, to grant the rights for the people. They forget what America stands for. They forget why American is so great. They forget that not many other people in the world have that privilege to birth given rights . You protect and defend Americans' freedom and way of life. You have fought for our country, veterans and flag. You risk your time. The time you get to spend with your family, so we are able to spend it with
West Coast Hip Hop”, because it based on singers who write about their cultural movements. Oh Snap features photos of west coast hip hop artist such as Tupac, E-40, Snoop Dog, The Game, Ice Cube, and much more. What I love about this showroom is that you walk in there is music playing loud, on the side there is a small television with headphones to heard of why artists feel free to express themselves in music. Each artist had their own way of express their selves, whether it Gangster Rap, Gangster-Funk, or hyperactive. West coast music is based on a reflection on what African American struggle or what they face on a daily life; Ice cube once stated “our art is a reflection of our reality”. Many people would think that their music is to cause trouble or mislead someone, however, they’re only speak how they get treated due to their skin color. When I walked into the showroom the song “keep ya head up” was playing by Tupac; he notes “You know what makes me unhappy, When brothers make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy, And since we all came from a woman, Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman, I wonder why we take from our women, Why we rape our women, do we hate our women? I think it's time to kill for our women, Time to heal our women, be real to our women”. In other words, what he is trying to say is that why do men like to disrespect women, if it a man’s job to protect them. I
The documentary America the Story of Us: Bust summarizes the transition from the prosperous and roaring 20s to the struggling Depression. Focusing on events and causes leading to the Depression as well as its effect on the American population during the time, the film gives an overlook of one of the most unfortunate times in American history. Beginning with the public’s distress during the stock market crash the depression began to spiral as people lost jobs from layoffs, lost homes due to foreclosure, and lost many of life’s basic necessities. The prosperous 1920’s was behind them and the publics high consumerism and production rates of the time reached an all-time low. After summarizing the causes of the Depression the documentary continues bringing attention to the building of the Hoover Dam and how its completion boosted American moral and started the slow and hard fight out of the Depression.
Throughout the video, scenes of chaos and violence unfold in the background while Childish Gambino remains the central focus, showcasing the juxtaposition between entertainment and social unrest. Symbolic imagery, such as the hooded figure riding a white horse, evokes biblical and historical references, suggesting themes of death, apocalypse, and societal decay. For example, Gambino highlights gun violence problems in America against the black population, especially the brutality of the police against the black community.
Donald Glover's This is America, released in 2018, is meant to show how African Americans are treated in America in the 21st century. The song shows that even in today's society, systemic racism and mistreatment are still prominent. And racist ideologies are still prominent in America. Donald Glover shows this in his music video when he hints at Jim Crow. Jim Crow represents a racist depiction of African Americans, mainly used in America during the eighteen hundred.
In the intro of the music video, there are drill sergeants commanding orders to his troops with. Also, in the beginning of the song drums over power which provides the foundation for a war effect. The beginning of the music video creates an imagery of modern day slavery. It draws attention to the aggressive interrogation methods police forces use against African Americans to confess to crimes they didn’t do. Kanye West wants to make it clear of the evils done to African Americans, “getting chocked by detectives, yeah, yeah, now check the method. They be askin’ us questions, harass and arrest us.”
The term ‘hip-hop’ refers to a complex culture compromising of four elements: deejaying, rapping, rhyming, graffiti painting, and b-boying. These elements incorporate hip-hop dance, style, and attitude. “Hip-hop originated in the primarily African American economically depressed South Bronx section of New York City in the late 1970s” (Tate, pg.1). Hip-hop is a culture of fashion, language, music, movement, visual art and expression. The genre of hip-hop comes with a very significant history and evolution with its own heroes, legends, triumphs and downfalls. “Real” hip-hop is often stressed in the 21st century due to what is being passed off as hip hop, and it is often made clear that just because one takes a hip hop class, or listens to hip-hop music, does not mean they conform to the true immersion of hip-hop culture. Therefore, “real” hip-hop encapsulates the true essence of hip-hop culture, untarnished by impurities such as rapacious record labels, and vapid, materialistic subject matter. Due to the background of how and where hip-hop first emerged, the African American culture often feel responsible to protect what is for them, and to protect the culture of hip-hop entirely. Boyd states that even though hip-hop as a culture was created as a social movement, the “commercializaiton” of hip-hop demonstrated in film and media construes it to another form of urbanization and popularity”(Boyd, 79). However, in the two movies being examined in this essay (Save the Last Dance
