Upon arriving in Cuba, the song El taxi, by Osmani was everywhere to be heard. The words: ‘Lo paró con una mano, lo paró que yo la vi’ and the music are really catchy and easy to remember. Talking to Cubans, explained to me that ‘real meaning’ of the lyrics and the meaning of doble sentido. So after understanding the core of the Cuban reggaeton, to play with words and senses, I was quite shocked by the words that I started singing and the actual meaning they interpreted, but on the other hand, I was amazed by the style the reggaetoneros used in order to say one thing and mean another. This song El taxi has a highly sexual connotation, a guy meets a girl on the way to the club, she was waiting for a taxi and he describes her appearance. But
As most people will agree on, music is essential to life. Music is heard while working, driving, sleeping, and even studying. Music can be a form of expression and also a form of entertainment. Songs can describe the life of a person, or they can describe their hopes and dreams. These songs can be heard everywhere from the supermarket to the bookstore. Just like emotions, music is the world’s universal language. Therefore, Chicano Music represents the lives of Mexican Americans who went through hardships as well as accomplishments.
In the essay “Of thee they sing with feeling”, Garrison Keillor details his opinion on the United States’ National Anthem and the unity it brings Americans when they join together in song. After reading his essay, a greater appreciation for the indescribable feeling it gives those who sing it was more thoroughly developed. Although our society is constantly changing, the National Anthem is a timeless patriotic piece that will be cherished by many generations to come.
After the Mexican Revolution of 1910, a nationalistic sentiment spread throughout Mexico as they sought to form a unified identity under its new constitution. Under the new organization of the country, Mexico underwent many political and social changes, many of them violent. At the turn of the 20th century, Mexican nationalism was of the utmost importance. Finally, the masses of Mexican poor began to have a voice in their own destiny and began to seek out a national identity. In order to be fully immersed in an identity that seemed ambiguous due to centuries of colonization, Mexico looked to the arts to help mold Mexico’s new character as a country. Muralists like Rivera, Siqueiros, Orozco and Khalo portrayed the struggle for freedom and democracy against the oligarchs that had exploited the poor for decades. Music also played a pivotal role in expressing nationalistic views and ideas through movements such as the traditional and the “indigenismo”. One of the composers who was at the forefront of the “indigenismo” movement was Carlos Chávez. Chávez strived to distance himself from romantic influences and practices, and searched for new methods to create pieces that were for everyone, not just the elite. Chavez’s investigation of indigenous Indian cultures, native folk elements, and dance forms brought an unprecedented vigor and visibility to 20th century Mexican Music. Chávez traveled to Europe and the United States to gain recognition beyond Mexico’s border, thus catapulting his influence on Mexico’s musical style and cultures.
When songwriters begin to pen the lyrics of a song, I believe their ultimate goal is to transcend time in hopes of reaching listeners for generations to come. J.R. Cash, professionally known as Johnny Cash, wrote a song that did just that. “Ragged Old Flag” is a patriotic song that speaks to every generation. Written in 1974, “Ragged Old Flag” was meant to tell the story of our country. Johnny Cash recorded “Ragged Old Flag” live at the House of Cash. Cash wanted the song to be recorded live because it was raw, untouched, and unapologetically real. The basis of this analysis is to show how patriotism spans generations, but also why a song such as, “Ragged Old Flag” is an important part of patriotism in the United States of America.
Their sense of belongingness gives the people pride, because the songs embody the rich history, culture, and values of Mexico. As a result, people in in Mexican communities are able to proudly identify themselves as Mexicans. With a vast amount of culturally proud people, Mexican culture will ultimately be kept alive.
Everyone thinks of American identity differently but for most it does not include immigrants. For most it is that we Americans created everything and immigrants had nothing to do with it. In reality they had everything to do with it. For me and many other people we think that to be an American means that we are all different but come together as one tb something great for [people in need. In “ Immigrant Contribution” By: John F. Kennedy, and “A Quilt of Our Country” By Anna Quindlen, these 2 stories really touch on it because they both show who and how our country was made.
After watching “The Language You Cry In” in class, I found myself reflecting on how music has impacted my life and with whom I have shared it with. It’s truly incredible how a simple, 5 line chorus ultimately allowed this woman to discover her history as it traveled from Sierra Leone all the way to the Gullah society in Georgia. The really displays the power that music can have over not only individual societies, but over the globe. No matter what political movements were occurring and throughout the immense inequality and slavery that was being faced, music has always remained reliable. This song brought people together and allowed them to embrace their heritage even in the worst of times, and I believe that this is still true today.
The song God Bless the USA by: Lee Greenwood bestows a message of unity and love towards the United States of America. The message of this song shows that the American dream means working hard and fighting for our country. America is an outstanding country that has pride and loyalty embedded in the heart and foundation. The tone of the song is pride, which captures the sprit of the United States of America citizens. Tone is heard throughout the song especially in the chorus; “God Bless the USA”(Greenwood Line 16). Pride is another important element in creating tone in God Bless the USA; “That I’m proud to be an American”(Greenwood Line 25). I choose this song because I grew up listening to it with my father who fought for our country. I think
she pressures her students and if they don't get good grades, she tosses them to the side
Curiously enough, much of Blanco’s poem seems reminiscent of Walt Whitman’s “I Hear America Singing” due to the fact that it talks about the same everyday activities that occur in America. Both poems also use a rhetoric tone. In addition to the tone, they tend to use personification. The style/layout of each poem are very similar to each other.
Phil Robertson is the patriarch of the Robertson family. He is also known for his role on "Duck Dynasty". He recently announced who he will be endorsing for president. Phil gave a list of requirements that had to be met before he endorsed anybody. He stated that the person has to be Godly and has to love their job. He also stated that the person has to love the country. Additionally, he jokingly stated that the candidate has to know how to hunt, kill and cook a duck.
Ten minutes from downtown Santa Cruz lies a lush city greenbelt with spectacular views overlooking town and Monterey Bay. Pogonip’s 640 acres and 8 miles of trail serve up prime Santa Cruz hiking, walking and running through redwood forest, oak woodland and remnants of coastal terrace prairie, plus some good old-fashioned, totally nonnative-yet-fetching-nonetheless grassland. The very limited mountain biking possibilities expanded with the June 2013 opening of the Emma McCrary Trail, which connects Santa Cruz mountain bikers and equestrians with bike trails at UCSC and Wilder Ranch State Park. Pogonip is so beloved by city residents that many people honor it by putting a “the” in front of its name, as in: “I go to the Pogonip daily to recover
Music is an important staple of my culture, two big genres include; Country and Southern Rock. Every culture has its own musical styles that represent them. “Music has always been an important cultural element in Southern culture” or any culture for that matter. (Butler, 41). Even know I personally don’t like Country or Southern Rock it’s important to my culture. When I ride with either of my parents, Southern Rock and Country is always blaring from the speakers. When I was growing up I remember hearing “Sweet Alabama” playing. Both of my parents loved singing along with. The song “Sweet Home Alabama” is a song about Southern pride.
According to Silverblatt’s book, Modern Inquisitions, “The Spanish… created new social categories of humans-new units of “others”-in the course of institutionalizing their rule.” (2004 p. 192) Silverblatt termed the creation of new categories based on the skin color and parental ancestry racial thinking, a form of thought modernity still has not escaped. Coates’ Between the World and Me states, “Difference in hue and hair is old. But the belief in the preeminence of hue and hair, the notion that these factors can correctly organize a society and that they signify deeper attributes which are indelible-this is the new idea at the heart of these new people who have been brought up hopelessly, tragically, deceitfully, to believe that they are white.” (2015 p. 7) Coates continues by further exploring the dangerous effects of racial thinking, including the limitations of education, protection, and support for a black person. The racial thinking revolution has started numerous movements including the Civil Rights Movement in an attempt to gain equal legal rights and limit institutional racism and movements against over policing. Coates also explores how it has also been used by individuals in attempts to reclaim their own bodies.
