Thomas Hart Benton is known as one of the great American painters. He used art to portray to history and current events of America. He once said "history was not a scholarly study for me but a drama 1." Growing up in Jefferson City, the capital of Missouri, my school went on yearly trips to the Capitol. On all of the trips I viewed Thomas Hart Benton's "A Social History of the State of Missouri." Benton's mural told the history of my state through bright colors and vivid portraits. The mural ignited a love of art and a love of Thomas Hart Benton. When I heard about "American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood" at Nelson Atkins Museum of Art showcasing almost one hundred of Benton's works I knew I had to see them
The St. Louis Art Museum has many intriguing pieces of artwork, but my eyes seemed to navigate towards Thomas Cole’s pieces. Research has shown that Thomas Cole was best known for his landscape art, but through the portal of America’s wilderness and it’s association of God. Nature, human life, and mortality were the key viewpoints
William Tecumseh Sherman was a great Union general fighting in the Civil War. His major feat during the war was his campaign through the South. He started in Chattanooga, Tennessee and ended in Savannah, Georgia. His March used psychological warfare to make southerners lose support for the Southern cause by bringing the war to their front-doors. This showing of how cruel the war really was is said to have ended the war more quickly.

Sherman’s March was in 1864 and lasted from November 15 until December 21. General William T. Sherman led around 60,000 soldiers on a march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia which lasted for 285 miles. The purpose was to frighten Georgia’s civilian population in abandoning the Confederate cause. It demonstrates the problems that were left after the end of the Civil War such as the role of the federal government in protecting its citizen’s rights. Economic and racial justice is still unsolved after the war, with land ownership still not being available to everybody

Explanatory Essay: Like many people, Thomas Ponce and Denee Benton both had dreams. Unlike many people, they were able to follow their dreams despite the challenges and obstacles along the way. In Tomas Ponce’s story, “The Day I Saved a Life” he goes to the beach for his eleventh birthday with his family, where he saves a baby shark from a fisherman who was going to eat it. Later in life, he became an advocate for animal rights. In the biography “Denee Benton: Broadway Princess” Benton adored Broadway and performers as a little girl.
Our human experiences are shown in many different ways, including through art. Kerry James Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama, 1955. The civil rights movement was in his hometown. He was a witness to Watts rebellion in 1965. His father was a postal worker who liked to buy fancy broken watches. Kerry’s father, after the bombing of the four girls, moved the family to Los Angeles. When Kerry went to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, he saw that there were no African-American artist, nor African-American paintings. Kerry thought that the story of these people should be told too.

I was drawn to the painting, Letter from Overseas, because of the artistic elements and painting techniques Thomas Hart Benton used to illustrate the overall impact of the war on domestic culture. This painting depicts a woman sitting on the fence reading a letter she received in the mail from a loved one in the war. The mailbox left ajar suggests the urgency with which the letter was received. During World War II, letter writing was a prominent source of communication between American families and soldiers.
