Homework is something that students have to deal with for at least twelve years of their lives. Those twelve years do not include things such as colleges and universities. However, homework is not necessary for a fourth of the time students are forced do it. Homework is not necessary for students that are in high school. Homework in high school is just busy work, does not increase test scores, and has harmful nonacademic effects. All though homework is not necessary for high school students it is necessary and helpful for students in lower level schools. In elementary school, homework helps with students work

Homework given by teachers is meant to have the student retain what they learned at school, by making them do it at home. In Tokarcki’s article “Thoughtful Homework or Busy Work: Impact on Student Academic Success”, he states, “They must avoid giving busy work just to make sure that the students are completing a certain amount of homework each night” (2011). . Most teachers, however, will hand out work that is just meant to add another assignment in their grade books. By handing out busy work most students will just not do the assignment, or copy it off a classmate that always does the …show more content…
Most teachers tend to give between 30 minutes to one hour of homework per night, multiply that by about five or six classes equates to four to five hours of homework per night. Galloway, in his article “Nonacademic Effects of Homework in Privileged, High-Performing High Schools, stated, “Students who did more hours of homework experienced greater behavioral engagement in school but also more academic stress, physical health problems, and lack of balance in their lives” (2013) If homework causes these things in students then it is more harmful than helpful. Homework is meant to help students, not cause many problems to one’s
Homework is barely given in high school. Teachers try to get as much done in class and tell the students to just review their notes. I think that is terrible. Personally, I think homework should be given at least three times a week to help the brain continue outside of class and also help with time management. Once entering college to be successful you should at least study the number of hours out of class that you’re in class. This is a big difference once in college and you have never had to accommodate this skill while in high school. It’s almost as if you’re being set up to fail because so much is expected from you and you become overwhelmed with the college life that you should already be prepared
After a long day of school, students are tired, stressed, and overworked. This is often something that is ignored when it comes to students of all ages. Homework provides a heavy load that can add additional stress and time on a student’s shoulders. Schools should be making sure that students are receiving enough work throughout the day, to make sure kids do not have the worry of homework when school is over. Students who receive lots of homework, may not have enough time in the evenings to be around family, friends and enjoy the rest of their day.
In conclusion, homework for high school students is not necessary. Time is better spent getting exercise, working off stress and interacting with others.
In the beginning of the twentieth century homework was viewed as an exceptional practice that helped students learn through practice and repetition. In recent years parents and educators were concerned that homework is taking away from “social experience, outdoor recreation, and creative activities” These experiences are necessary to a good childhood. So, let’s think about it, is homework necessary for success in school?
The quality of students’ homework is much more important than the quantity of students homework and data collected during recent studies has proven that homework is not making the grade. “. . . American students are entangled in the middle of international academic rankings: 17th in reading, 23rd in science, and 31st in math according to the most recent results from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)” (Murphy-Paul). Students should not be given an excessive amount of homework because the pressure of having to complete excessive amounts of homework every night is quite daunting for most students. Knowing how much homework is the right amount correlates with age and grade. An 8th grade student should not be given a myriad of homework that would keep her awake past midnight completing assignments. In any case, there should be a limit on the amount of homework all teachers give to students because an excessive amount of homework would eventually cause students to become uninterested in school and learning, which could result in poor test scores and low ranks in international academic rankings. In order for students to carry out daily activities throughout the day restfully, teachers must be able to provide homework that does not exceed the appropriate amount of time needed to complete it, which is based on grade level. If teachers are too clueless of a students health due to excessive amounts of homework, many students will develop cases of sleep
Homework is a huge role in your education, many kids think that teachers like to annoy kids by giving them homework. They do not look at the positives, homework can result in you getting a job, money, business, etc. Less than one percent of students say, “homework is stressful,” now those students will struggle to be successful. for example, Steve Jobs was successful but he had to struggle to get to his spot. homework can result in learning to take responsibility for his or her actions, teaches you to
Students should not have homework because it adds extra stress to their lives. Kids are already very stressed because of school, especially high school students who happen to get the most homework. Homework is just added stress. Students already stress about grades, colleges, IN class work, sports, family life, and friends so why add to that with
No we days , some school think thid homework is necessary however, I feel that homework is not needed because we need to rest from school and it takes up too much time. in reality it is not necessary to take homework because with all the work we do daily at school is more that enough house is our only place of rest and we are assigned homework as not every day we have to get up early to go the school and to be late to our house and still do the homework is a lot of stress for a single week is very heavy with nine hours a day is more that enough teacher put us a lot of work and then get home and do the homework is a very heavy.
The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks.
On the contrary, excessive amounts of homework can be counterproductive and can actually bring students grades down. Large amounts of homework can work against students AND their grades. An experiment (by the Australian Institute of Family Studies) watched 10,000 students around the world, and concluded that those with massive loads of homework were actually achieving lower scores. If students are assigned a lot of homework, they will simply get tired/bored of doing it and will not learn anything from it. Also, if the teacher does not go over any of the assignments handed out, and a student doesn’t get it, then it could influence his/her grades on the next tests. For example, when students learn a topic in math, that topic usually incorporates itself into the next topic. If the student has a hard time with a simple topic, and then moves into the next unit that builds upon the simple topic, he/she will fall behind. To summarize, doing some homework is good for students. The problem occurs when they are assigned large amounts of homework. I believe that doing a little homework each night is beneficial, but when the time spent doing homework increases it can have an overall negative impact on the student.
Homework is important to have. I allows students to learn skills they will use their entire
The majority of students have, at one point or another, wished for less homework. For some student’s homework is not a big issue but for other students it can take hours and even days to do all their homework. That wasted time could be used for enjoyment or learning life skills instead of homework. Nine in ten high school students reported feeling stressed about homework (Galloway 4). So, should students get less homework? Yes, students should receive less homework because it improves their well-being by reducing stress and its impacts on health, increasing leisure time, and showing that homework does not affect grades significantly.
Many students in school struggle to complete piles of homework assigned to them each night. Some wonder if homework is really critical to learning, and many wish homework wouldn’t exist at all. These people argue that homework is overwhelming and it takes away most of their free time at home and is just “busy work”. While some people may feel this way, I personally believe that homework is a key point of learning because it teaches time management and helps solidify what was learned during the day.
Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between the arguments for more or less homework are remarkable. It is important to see both the positive and negative viewpoints, because homework is something that every student will have to deal with. It can be stressful with extracurricular activities and at some points may seem useless. However, homework is beneficial for understanding the material, and keeping kids out of trouble. Overall, I believe that even though homework may be excessive at some points, it can be extremely beneficial for the future.
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
