Question 1: War is already a relatively rare phenomenon, although some forms are more common than others, but imagine a world where war is almost unheard of. This scenario is a highly probable outcome of a world populated solely by mature, liberal democracies. There are many benefits of having a democracy as a countries form of government, and less violence is one of them. Whether the violence be interstate wars, civil wars or terrorism, all instances would decrease in the case of a democratic regime. Democracy is defined as a political system in which candidates compete for political office through frequent, fair elections in which a sizeable portion of the adult population can vote. We believes it is imperative that all As stay together. To add to the argument that ethnic lines should be drawn, it is well known that As and Bs have a long history of not getting along, this brings fear to State A that ethnic cleansing might occur if the lines are not drawn around them. State B refuses to budge on this topic, they have threatened that if they do not get all the land they want, then they will wage war against State A. In recent history, State B has never gone through on a war threat, but this time may be different. Through intelligence gathering, we have discovered B’s large growth in military and arms. We believe that they have been developing their army and building up weapons supplies for the past few years. According to Daryl Press in “Calculating Credibility”, there is two ways to measure credibility, past action theory and current calculus theory. If I follow the current calculus theory, which Mr. Press believes to be correct, State B’s threat is credible based on military growth and high interest in this new territory. As a result, a bargain through coordination will have to be reached. Both States A and B will have to give a little in our territory dispute to stay inside the bargaining range.
