When I think of racial discrimination, I automatically include prejudice and stereotyping. I believe that these go hand in hand and without one the others are irrelevant. Meaning, if we did not have racial discrimination, prejudice and stereotyping would not exist. This is my personal belief. The definition of race in our class book is as follows “Race typically refers to appearances, such as skin color, hair type (straight, curly, kinky), skin hue, eye color, stature, body size, nose, eyes, and head shape” (Robinson-Wood, 2008). So racial discrimination could be defined as unequal treatment on the premise of their race or ethnicity (Pager and Shepherd, 2008).

Both Kim and Heather tried to apologize, but, my decision was to not have that type of negativity in my life. Workplace- Because I was a stay at home mom for most of my life, I have not had an opportunity to witness any racial discrimination at the few jobs I did have. Discrimination is when someone has a bias opinion on a specific crowd of people due to their race, sex, religion, or order of rank. This basically goes hand in hand with the phrase judging a book by its cover meaning the person with the negative opinion will not give the other individual a fair chance for the reason being they are being stereotypical and not thinking of the other person’s talent, or character. A modern day example of discrimination would be if a male employer were to compensate a female employee a lower pay due to her gender. In a study that was reviewed by Deitch and her colleagues (2003), blacks were interviewed at work about whether the felt they were being discriminated. Most participants had difficulty answering because they were not sure whether discrimination was linked to their race or different factors like gender.
