Kanas (1983) described three main approaches in group based interventions. These are: • Educational –aiming at helping patients manage their symptoms using advice and educational techniques. It also emphasises on providing them information regarding the disease, medication and includes other important topics such as social skills applied to interpersonal relationships. • Psychodynamic- it aims to improve the patient’s self-knowledge using the techniques of clarification and interpretation. • Interpersonal- it aims at improving the capacity of people to relate better with others using the approach of ‘here and now’ of the interaction with other group members and/or the discussion of their interpersonal problems along with its possible solutions
In this week vignette it talks about Alonso who leads an addiction counseling group weekly so that he can make some extra money. In my opinion Alonso didn’t come off as a very nice person when certain members asked questions. He was very direct and seemed eager to start the session and collect his money.
Amy Romero is a certified teacher, school counselor, and registered play therapist. She offers support groups for children between the ages of three and eight. This support group help children process their levels of daily stress and anxiety to ensure they are able to alleviate those stressors in a healthy positive manner. She is able to interact with these children via “play” and observe their psychological baseline. Then use that baseline to improve their behavioral, mental, and cognitive development. The session is open to boys and girls in that age group and is located in Lafayette. Succession of this group therapy will result in children having a higher self-concept, self-esteem, ability to display their behaviors/feelings in a healthy
life problems. At the end of the 18 month group therapy, the children reported they felt relief that there were other children like them; they found it soothing that they were able to open up and talk about the secret life of addiction in the family and most importantly that they were able to make friends and not feel so alone. Peleg-Oren (2002) stated the outcome of the group was “As the children became more aware and developed more control, they also had more tools to deal with the problematic aspects of their lives. It was felt that some measure of development of a combination of emotional, behavioral, and social awareness-the major aim of the group intervention-had been attained” (pg. 417).

I believe strength and a weakness all at the same time was that I tried to provide useful information on grief but I wondered if I provided too much information and it was overwhelming for the group. I felt the information was simplified however maybe it should have been condensed into two days’ worth of material instead of four, I am not sure. I tried to use the available clip art to add some humor to a very tough subject and I am not sure if that would be considered a strength or a weakness.
Those who want to become a professional helper need many skills and attributes, and many of these skills, are not learned in the class room but through life experiences. Likewise, many of these life experiences cause us to pursue careers as professional helpers. My experience with alcoholic and drug addicted parents is what I will be referencing, as my example. As a child I never knew what an intervention consisted of, and my first thought now is about the TV show, but this strategy is used for any human service. The seven steps used for the intervention strategy consist of: gathering data, storing and sharing information, Negotiating contracts, building a trusting relationship, designing an action plan, implementing the action plan, and monitoring
Ben Johnson stated, “Groups not only help to ease the sense of isolation, but also give the opportunity to practice re-engaging with people,” (Everyday Health, By Beth W. Orenstein, Medically Reviewed by Farrokh Sohrabi, MD). Group therapy would help Pat to social with others, when she finds a job, and give her a change to leave her home and be in the community. If Pat was able to relate to others, experiencing the same issues she might be able to cope with difficult situations.

family members are undermined, and there is a tendency towards interfamilial violence, along with economic hardships, health problems, impaired social functioning, and frequent clashes with the law-enforcements authorities” (pg. 404). Because the children of addicted parents are “a population at risk,” they need support and therapeutic treatment from outside sources other than family.
The fundamental purpose of group therapy is to afford an individual with the opportunity to see themselves in a different perspective and develop a more accurate idea of how others perceive them. As a leader, I want to facilitate change and I do not want to rush a client into doing something way out of their comfort zone at first. I do not want to exacerbate the problem and have the client sink deeper onto their silence. However, I do not want the silence to hinder the group or the individual so I want to understand the dynamics of the silent behavior. I want to observe how the client is throughout the initial group process. Some HIV/AIDS clients are very reluctant to talk about themselves, so I want to see whether he has been showing signs
The number of children and adolescents who suffer from anxiety have increased tremendously over the past several years. The two treatment options that can be offer to an individual dealing with anxiety is medication and therapy. Out of the two, therapy has been known to be the most effective.
For teachers, the biggest difficulty they face is disruptive behaviors in students. Disruptive behaviors make up one-half to one-third of child referrals to school psychologists (Luiselli, Putnam, & Sunderland, 2002). Because these behaviors are so prevalent it can cause significant stress for teachers lacking classroom management skills. Reports from teachers show that 76% believe they would be better able to teach with a reduction in problem behaviors. These reports also show 33% of teachers consider quitting due to issues with controlling problem behaviors (Kowalewicz & Coffee, 2014). To deal with these behaviors, school psychologists might recommend the use of an individual-oriented intervention or a group-oriented intervention. The
Interpersonal communication is the process of creating social relations between at least two people involved in a process of interaction. The interpersonal communication, can be defined as the process by which information is exchanged and understood by two or more persons, typically in order to motivate or influence behavior. The process of communication happens when two people interact each other, putting themselves one in the other. The interaction involves therefore a merger of mutual roles, and mutual empathy skills. The objectives of interaction are interconnect with one another, the full ability to anticipate and provide behave according to their needs one and another.
Interpersonal - includes salutations, discussing, social chat, sharing ideas, and showing concern. E.g. Sharing your ideas at a work meeting.
One type of service in guidance and counseling is counseling group. Group counseling services can be an alternative that can be implemented counselor to solve problems in a group setting counselee effectively and efficiently. McClure, 1990 (in Gladding, 1994: 1) states through group, individual will achieve its objectives and relate to others in ways that are innovative and productive. This service is a service that is dynamic because it uses group dynamics to help solve the problem of the counselee in group situations (Berg, Landreth & Fall: 17; Westergaard, 2009: 128).
