Three people that stand out as leaders include Laurence Olivier, Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., and Edith Nourse Rogers. Laurence Olivier was born into a strict religious family in southern England around the beginning of the 20th century. Olivier’s schooling included acting and drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama, which led to him joining the Birmingham Repertory company. After taking multiple lead roles in many of Shakespeare’s plays, he became a success, helping him become the founding director of the Royal National Theatre (Biography.com Editors). Benjamin O. Laurence Olivier leadership was primarily displayed after he became the founding director of the Royal National Theatre. He demonstrated his headship by taking younger directors on board, creating an opportunity that would usually be a “long-cherished dream” (Billington). Olivier encountered many challenges, one of which included the loss his mother, while he was at a young age, subsequently leading him to deal with his father’s severity. These challenges helped develop Olivier’s leadership because his father was the one who pushed Olivier into acting (Biography.com Editors). The successes that Olivier accomplished in his career included becoming the founding director of the Royal National Theatre, becoming knighted by King George VI, and being elevated to peerage by Queen Elizabeth II. Olivier also served as a pilot in World War II, mostly flying training flights for gunners (Hurwitt). Laurence Olivier would receive a reception that would praise him for his contribution to the theatre and the acting community. One lesson learned from the leadership of Laurence Olivier would be to help others who may not have the chance otherwise to participate. One question for Olivier would be why he thought of bringing on younger directors on. This information provided would be beneficial in learning how one can implement different leadership techniques and knowing when to be inclusive. Have you ever thought what a world without human rights would be like? Mahatma Gandhi, Harriet Tubman, and Emma Watson don’t have to. Notwithstanding, each of them has a different strategy, all three of them want the same thing: for everyone to be granted the same rights. Gandhi’s most prominent goal was for South Africa to become its own country, far from the unforgiving government of Britain. Harriet, unlike the other two, was sworn to secrecy, for freeing slaves was illegal at the time. Emma Watson is the face of HeForShe, a campaign for the advancement of equality of both men and women. These three individuals all persevered through difficult challenges and heroically stood up for what they believe in.
What makes an effective leader? Just because a leader is good doesn’t mean they’re effective and just because a leader is effective doesn’t mean they’re good. Maximilien Robespierre was one of the leaders of France that had a firm grip over the whole country as head of the Committee of Public Safety. Even though Maximilien Robespierre, a philosophical leader during the French Revolution, had many good leadership qualities at first, due to his advancement in authority he became power crazy and started turning on his own colleagues and the people of France.
Throughout history select individuals have been documented as a result of their ability to lead, or lack there of. The documentation over the years has been helpful to historians, scholars, and the general population when trying to better understand the characteristics of a leader. Two of the most memorable leaders in world history are Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry V who both shared the duty of ruler over England at some point in their life. Both Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry V are held in high regard as a result of their accomplishments and their over all success as a leader. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Martin L King Jr., just to name a few, all have one important thing in common, Leadership. Leadership is defined as ‘individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively and the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this.’ As I think back on my past, I wonder “Have I demonstrated any leadership abilities?” Leadership takes on a big role in everyone’s life, from school to sports to raising a family or running a business. It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Of course, I have not accomplished an impeccable act of leadership like the famous leaders mentioned; however, I believe I have put forth an effort.

Martin Luther King Jr. had illustrated civil disobedient to the world during a challenging time, by quoting inspirational words from Gandhi and Thoreau. Gandhi had also quoted Thoreau throughout his stimulating time. Before Martin Luther King and Gandhi, Thoreau exemplified civil disobedience in the 1800’s. The purpose of Thoreau’s civil disobedience was to make a different world. King and Gandhi had the same purpose. That is one of the main reasons why they connected to Thoreau’s essay.

Throughout history, individuals have made great changes in society. Three individuals that have changed history were Genghis Khan, William the Conqueror, and Hernan Cortes. These three individuals have changed many things in three different places. Genghis Khan had changed nearly all of Asia and parts of Europe with his massive empire. William the Conqueror had changed England and ruled it with an iron fist. And Hernan Cortes completely destroyed the Aztec Empire and changed how people would live in the Americas. Each continent or land was much different before that individual had came, the individual had to take specific actions in order to change his region and each region was changed either in a negative or positive way.
Mahatma Ghandi once said, “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.” Although Gandhi is completely against violence, I believe that violence can be justified depending on the cause of it. If violence is used in the act of defense from an aggressor, then it is acceptable. However, in any other case, violence is unjustified. Looking back in history, several examples can be appreciated where violent paths were chosen. If those scenarios are analysed today, one can realize that peaceful options were available, but not chosen. Individuals like Martin Luther King Jr and Mahatma Ghandi both used peaceful methods to reach their own respective objectives. Mahatma Gandhi used non violent protests to break the British rule and Martin Luther King Jr followed suite with his own non violent methods including the famous Selma march for social justice. However, there are some circumstances where violence is the only answer. For example, during World War II, the Allied forces were compelled to fight back against the aggressive Nazi Forces in order to protect the larger population. Additionally, I believe that positivity can not be a result of reacting to conflict or danger with violence. As Gandhi said, the evil that derives from violence far outweighs the short term positives.
