You would like to know three reasons I chose to pursue a college education.
NUMBER ONE:
I was always told that you are never too old to learn and that you can learn something new every day. I am 56 years old and I am choosing to go back to school by taking courses at the Pierce College.
I’ve always had the idea of returning to school in the back of my mind for quite some time. There once was a program offered on my job called “The School at Work Program” that prepared student/employees for college. I was enrolled and graduated from that program with passing grades. However, I never enrolled into college after graduating the program. You could say that I am the biggest procrastinator in the world; that is a trait which I truly need
After graduating high school, I went straight into the work field for 2 and a half years. I never really appreciated school growing up and never gave a real effort in grade school. After 2 Years of not going to school, I began to notice and appreciate the value of receiving an education. At first i was hesitant of returning back to school because of my age, I was 21 years old. Most people my age were finishing college and I was just beginning. When I first attended NOVA my goal was to just receive my associates degree in business administration but after a year I realized that I shouldn't just settle for that when I could get my bachelors. I finished my last course at NOVA this past summer and it was a great feeling. I had always planned to
A majority of people these days are planning or are going to college. These people have many reasons for going to college. The option of going to college is a major decision and there are many factors that are considered in making this decision. One of the many reasons of making the decision to go to college is to receive a bigger salary. Another reason is for the opportunities that become available from going to college. People also decide go to college to be better prepared and successful in the future.
College is often a word that can bring positive or negative thoughts depending on one’s experiences. The process of being accepted, maintaining high standards once accepted, and then paying off debts is stressful. Once adapted to college, the most important task is determining what you want to do with your life. Dan Rather once said, “A college degree is the key to realizing the American dream, well worth the financial sacrifice because it is supposed to open the door to a world of opportunity (“Quotes about College Students”).” The biggest question a student must ask themselves is “What door do I want to open up for the rest of my life?” For instance, two characteristics that describe me are athletic and business minded. As I searched for
My inspiration to go back to school started almost seven years ago. This is when I started my new job at Kraft Foods. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and I really did not know exactly what I would be doing. What I did know, was that I would be doing manual labor of some kind. I also did not know what kind of people I would be working with or what they would think of me. I was just happy to have a job after being laid off from my job as an accounting assistant in Long Beach, California. After being out of work for almost six months and the economy being so bad in 2010, I was desperate for a job. I decided to take a minimum wage position making eight dollars an hour. Little did I know at the time, but this job would show me
Deciding to return to school at my age was definitely a difficult chose but I wanted to have a career and not just a job. Working already in the medical field, I realized that I would rather be an advocate for the people that need help adjusting to life’s changes, and people with mental, or emotional problems. I researched and saw that their where many career opportunities, in the Human Services field. Although, my primary purpose in life is to raise my children to be decent individuals, and understand that people are special in their own way. Coming back to school has help me see, and shows my children that nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. I want to gather and learn as much knowledge as I can, too help me achieve my goal.
The decision to return to school is not one to be taken lightly, especially if you’ve been out of school for two decades, as in my case. The decision is even more taxing as the sole bread-winner caring for a young daughter and a disabled spouse. I had been working in healthcare for nearly three years as a Data Analyst/IT Project Manager for a behavioral healthcare provider when I became frustrated with my job. Prior to my time in healthcare, I worked side-by-side with top movers and shakers in fast-paced large law firms. When cancer hit my family, I was needed at home and the game changed.
Hi Lauren. Thank you for the response. I did think it was too late to come back to school. I am so glad I didn’t listen to that little voice deep down inside that said I would regret this. I’m happy you chose the same! We are really doing what’s not only best for our futures but our children’s, as well. I wish you all the best of luck!
I made the decision to go back to school for many different reasons. I saw it as an opportunity to continue my education, potentially make more money in my career and prove to myself that I could accomplish this goal. Even after, placing this personal goal on hold for the past ten years, having three children and working. I knew this would definitely help me in the long run. It has always been dream of mine to graduate from college. To do what only two of my family members before me have done. Growing up in Compton, California. College wasn't an option for most, however I was fortunate enough to have parents who believed in me and my sisters and really pushed us to continue to further our education. I believe moving forward if I stay persistent
The reason I returned to college was for personal achievement and for lost job opportunities. I am currently 45 years old and I have been to numerous colleges; yet, I have failed to complete college in the past. After many years, I struggled to understand why attending college in a traditional manner was so difficult for me. Just a decade ago, know such things as online courses or interdisciplinary studies programs. Taking classes in a class room were challenging because being a mother, a wife and working a full time job left not time for me to complete school. Now times have changed and I am happy to see colleges like Governors State University provide adult learners the flexibility of taking online courses. Over the years I realize how important

I must say I struggled with the idea of going back to college. I am 34 years old. What in the world was I thinking? College, now? How old will I be when I graduate? Well I went against my thoughts and self doubt and went for it. I am enrolled in college, community college, but it’s a start. Hopefully it will be amazing and will lead me to success. I am currently in my first quarter. I have a long way to go, but I am going to get there, no matter what.
Going back to school requires a lot of planning especially at our age, I am 47 years old and just like you, there were questions regarding going back to school that required the use of my critical thinking more than ever to be able to come up with the correct answer and ultimately a decision.
I was born into a first-generation American working-class family in Northern California. High School education was valued in my family and we were expected to do well, but a college education was considered more of an impractical and expensive path to becoming financially independent. It was not impressed upon me that graduating college would provide me a solid foundation to establish financial security or that college could play a valuable role in the enhancement my character. Unfortunately, I did not have the insight to see otherwise resulting in my withdrawal from college and entrance into the work force. I got a job working retail full-time and told myself I would go back to college after I saved up some money. My life would take an additional turn, and soon after I withdrew from college, I was married and pregnant with my first son. With this new reality, the
By going back to school and getting my degree I am opening up potentially lots of doors for myself in the future. I am setting a good example for my boys and that no matter what age you are, it is never too late to go back to school and further your education. Education is the key to opening up positions in the workplace that someone without an education would not be able to pursue. The benefits will far out way the time and work that it will take for me to complete my degree. This will be something that I can be proud of and prove to myself and others that no matter how hard the goal may seem or how long it may take you to reach the end results, it is always worth it to follow your dreams. I am extremely motivated to accomplish this goal for myself.
Going back to school as an adult is a decision that many adults are making each year. Whether they want to increase their employable skills, gain more experience, or enrich their own lives, more and more people are returning to school every year.
