The three world religions influence Pi's thinking since he sees the world as a different place and it makes him a better person because he loves Hinduism for the its natural love of its spirituality and beauty, Pi loves Christianity as he falls in love with the story of Christ, he loves Islam for it's striking way of praying and in the end he just wants to love god in many different ways. Pi is a Hindu from birth, at the age of fourteen he adds Catholicism to his religions, and by fifteen he adds Islam. Pi held a special place in his heart for all three faiths that he had followed as Christianity, Islam and Hinduism ended off in believing the existence of god. Pi embraced Islam and Christianity while maintaining a Hindu as he tried to understand
Pi feels it is okay to practice all three religions because they all have one goal or purpose which is the belief in God. Since each story he has heard is different, it does not take away from the main moral. This ties in with the imagination aspect because no matter how a story is told, the end result is the same. An example of this is when he is confronted and surrounded by the Priest, Pandit, and Imam. His response as to why he was practicing Hindu, Christian and Muslim faiths was, “Bapu Gandhi said, ‘All religions are true.’ I just want to love God.”(Page 76) Believing in all three religions is something Pi feels is important to him because he is just trying to love and pray to God in as many ways as possible. Although the stories are interesting, it doesn’t really matter how you got to the ending if the purpose of the story is the equal. The important of Pi’s imagination is triggered by this and has later gone into great effect. The religions he practices represent hat behind every reason, everyone has their own way of saying it, whether it be fiction or non-fiction.
The religions of the world, while differing greatly in their specifics, are surprisingly similar. The three most prevalent religions in the world are Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism, in that order. All believe in a higher power that presides over and created man. Islam originated in approximately 609 C.E., or Common Era, and Christianity originated around 33 C.E. which is supposedly when Jesus Christ was crucified. The main prophet of Islam, Muhammad, is supposedly of the lineage of Jesus Christ. Both religions consider Abraham the father of the people of Israel, his son Ishmael being the “Father of the Arabs” and his son Isaac being the “Father of the Hebrews”. Hinduism originated in India in
Some of the classical world religions that exist today in our society would have to Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism,Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism. However, Buddhism originated from the teachings of an Indian prince named Siddhartha at around the 500 BCE (Buddhism) Offhand one can say buddhism relate to meditating and being at peace while living in the moment. Buddhism has four common rules which is what they mainly believe in. The first one being that to exist is to suffer and has a purpose, second one being their is a cessation of suffering which leads to nirvana, next is that their is a path with suffering. The way they look at experience is by categorizing is in five different forms.
As Pi grows up he is surrounded by Hindu culture and beliefs from his mother, as it is the “most common religion in the Indian subcontinent”(Carnagie,et al 239). “Hinduism is a South Asian religion based on traditions that emerged around 1500 BCE”(Carnagie,et al 239). Hinduism’s followers are called Hindus. “In India, Hinduism is called Sanatana Dharma, which means “eternal religion” or Vaidika Dharma, which means “religion of the Vedas,” a set of Hindu scriptures or holy writings”(Carnagie,et al 239). Hinduism “is the world’s third largest religion following, Christianity and Islam”(Carnagie,et al 239), which are the other two religions in the novel.
Religion impacts Pi’s life by offering new ways to learn about whoever the specific religion believes in. It can also demonstrate how people worship their God(s) compared to how he worships who he believes in. Pi is Hindu but he thinks he is only Hindu because of certain traditions. He said “I am a Hindu because of sculptured cones of red kumkum powder and baskets of yellow turmeric nuggets…] (Martel 59).
As explained in the book, Pi follows three different religions; Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Pi is extremely interested in all three religions and tries to find himself through religion. Although, he does not understand why he can’t follow all three religions. “But he can’t be a Hindu, a Christian and a Muslim. It’s impossible. He must choose.” (76) This thread represents that he dedicates himself to the things he believes in and will fight for what he believes in. Even when his family disagreed with his decision of following all three religions, he still fought for what he believed.
In Life of Pi, Pi is raised Hindu but later in life decides to adopt Christianity and Islam as well. He practices these at once despite that each state that they contain the whole truth according to their religious leaders. However, storytelling and religious belief are so closely linked in the story Pi tells as well. He tends to focus on the stories behind all the different faiths, how they relate to God and, ultimately, love.
Three of the earliest religions that still exist today are Judaism (Hebrews), Christianity (Christians), and Islam (Muslims). Each group has its own Holy book to read and recite and guide them in their faith. Hebrews have the Old Testament and the book of the prophets are called the Talmud and the Torah, books in which prophets (messengers sent by God) tell his people what to do. The Christians have the Bible, scriptures that consist of the Old and New Testament. The Muslims have the Quran. Every religion has its own list of rules that the followers are expected to obey. To continue their practices, the followers would not only read, but they would also pray.
In the words of Gandhi, “The essence of all religions is one. Only their approaches are different”. In the story Life of Pi, Pi Patel personally experiences different aspects of four religions including Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. The author, Yann Martel promotes the concept of believing in more than one religion by exemplifying the diversities within each faith.
His faith and believe in a higher being not only kept him sane in a world of orderly chaos but also most likely kept him alive. Pi states that “I have been a Hindu all my life”(Martel 49), “I was fourteen years old-and a well-content Hindu on a holiday-when I met Jesus Christ”(Martel 50) and “Islam followed right behind, hardly a year later”(Martel 58). This chapter highlights the struggle that Pi faces with faith in general. Pi himself almost creates his own religion with sort of a blend of each faith. There were also references to Christianity such as “words of divine consciousness” and “an intellect confounded yet a trusting sense of presence and of ultimate purpose.”
One of my favorite experiences of fighting cancer was that 7 main world religions came together for a common cause; they were praying for me and my family. If I could change something in the world, I would unite people of different political and religious backgrounds for a common cause - the betterment of mankind. The human condition is so messy, if we each accepted one another and learned to work together the world would be a better place.
I think that faith plays a significant role in shaping Pi´s personality of Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Pi was born in Hindu and at the age of 14 Pi met Jesus Christ. When Pi met Jesus Christ he became a christian and began attending church. A year later Pi decided to change his religion and become a Muslim. He became a Muslim because he met a baker and the baker told him all about his religion and Pi decided he wanted to be a Muslim. Pi continues with his three religions Hinduism, Catholic and Muslim. He attends certain events when they have then for each religion. When everyone found out the Pi was in three different religions they didnt seem to like it but they couldnt stop him from believing.
There are many different religions around the world today. We all have our own opinions on whether or not we believe in God or not, but what makes every religion different from the other could be because of traditions or rituals, the way we dress based on our religion or the place we worship. However the one thing we all have in common is we turn to religion to guide us in one way or another for greater depth or to set us down the right path in life.
These religions all share one aspect of not being understood. They are either viewed as devil activities or seen as curses like the Haitians. The atheist community was seen negatively, as if they turned to the devil just as the Maria Lionza or spiritualist who feels they are not understood by other cultures even though it has found its way into popular religions like Catholicism. In some way these five religions have been viewed as differently and hurt in a way either by criticism or the earthquake that hit Haiti. Because of this they are automatically related to the devil’s work in some fashion yet they all relate to positive aspects, for example, healing and cleansing.
There are five major religions in the world who worship in a church. The five major religions in the world are: Hinduism,Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. People attend church once a week or even more. Many people go to church to become closer to God and to be forgiven for their sins. They strive to be perfect because achieving perfectness is taught by churches. Being perfect for many church members is not the case. Indeed church members aren’t perfect and have members who are hypocrites, greedy, who gossip and who attend to just be seen.
