The English Romantic Age, which lasted from the late 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, was born of the ideas of William Wordsworth, British poet and author. Many critics of this era believe that Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s co-publication of a collection of poems called Lyrical Ballads initiated Romanticism, which featured themes of nature, individualism and emotion. Wordsworth’s works are representative of this era; they include ideas about personal experience and emotion, as well as the influence of nature on man. He also used and advocated simple language that any reader could comprehend. This radical form of literature influenced other poets to write in a similar manner, creating a movement that forever changed poetry. Wordsworth’s ideas that prompted the Romantic Period were due to his upbringing and experiences as a student. Born in the spring of 1770, Wordsworth grew up with four siblings in England along the Derwent River, exposing him early on to nature’s beauty. He drew inspiration for his autobiographical poem, The Prelude, from his schooling at Cockermouth, as well as from his education in Hawkshead, where he and his brother attended school. He then attended Cambridge, using his experiences there to note his changing ideas of his education in the third book of The Prelude. This movement …show more content…
This elegy is in memory of a girl commonly thought to be his daughter, Catherine (referred to as Lucy in the poem), who died when she was just three years old. It describes Nature’s upbringing of Lucy, which signifies her death, using vivid scenes of nature. Literary critic Ian H. Thompson labels Wordsworth a “landscape architect, or at least as one of the spiritual and intellectual precursors of the profession...” The poem exemplifies this, as it is rich in natural scenes constructed by Wordsworth, which serve to show Lucy’s spiritual connection with the
In this essay I hope to uncover the many instances that William Wordsworth inconspicuously places his mother into The Prelude and to explore the multimodal occurrence of paternal loss throughout the text. Although both of Wordsworth's parents perished while he was young in years, it seems that his mother, Ann Wordsworth, was the greatest influencer of his poetic artistry. The loss of Ann Wordsworth can be said to be a defining point in the young William Wordsworth's life, and have had more of an impact on him than the loss of his father. If any of Wordsworth's poetic artistry came from the influence of the loss of his parents, it was most likely from the anger he felt towards his mother's desertion of him and his siblings, rather than the guilt that he associated with his father's death.
Romanticism can be described as the free expression of an artist. Putting feeling and emotion into poetry or art. Its creators wanted to make natural feelings significant. But some people saw it differently; it was seen as downgrading the power and importance of reason. Before romanticism, ideals were largely based upon intellect and reason. According to William Woodsworth, poetry should begin as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings," which the poet then "recollects in tranquility". It was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century. It was at its peak between 1800 and 1850. In English literature, the key figures of the Romantic movement are considered to be the group of poets including William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the much older William Blake. The Romantic Period took place during major social change in society. Poets and artists of the era used their work as a revolt against forces like the Industrial Revolution and the political and social standards of the Age of Enlightenment. They wanted to spread a message of peace. Romanticists are spiritual and have a strong connection with nature; they do not attach themselves to the human world. The emergence of Romanticism in Nineteenth Century British Literature provides a clear path for the future of literature.
A lot of artists and writers in the Romantic period is believed that natural world is source of emotions and good morals. First, Wordsworth writes about the past. Much of the poem is a reflection of his earlier days. He feels quite nostalgic toward his childhood. He misses the simplicity and the naivety of when he was a young boy. Although he thinks that he enjoyed his past, he can’t quite remember that far back. Wordsworth says, “with gleams of half-extinguished thought. With many recognitions dim and faint...” The past was definitely an important part of who he is, but he can’t remember exactly what happened way back then.
Romanticism is a very philosophical and artistic topic in English, it was mainly created during the 18th century and was influenced by neoclassicism which is the meaning of western visual arts, music, literature and more. It is the unique style of art, literature and music that shows the classical side of everything. Neoclassicism was originated in Rome around the middle of the 18th century. Neoclassicism is more based of the ability than the emotion, because the topic is filled with imaginative thoughts. In all of poetry, there was one very famous verse style that was used a lot and that was the heroic couplet verse, this style is commonly used in narrative and epic styles of poetry and keeping the lines rhymed.
Literary Romanticism was a literary movement that started in Europe toward the late 1700’s and reached America in the early 19th century just in time for its peak years. Originally sparked by the Industrial Revolution, it was a response to the political and social conditions of the time as well as a challenge to the new type of scientific exploration and rationalization of everyday life. Writing that was grand and inspired great feeling and awe marked the movement. According to the great Romantic author and poet William Wordsworth, the writing process for works of this time should start with “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, which the poet then recollects in tranquility, evoking thereby a new but corresponding emotion the author can then mould into art” (Wordsworth 2). Notable works of this period were Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, and William Wordsworth’s The Prelude. Perhaps the most well known of all Romantic literature is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, a novel well known for its quality and Romantic techniques. Through careful analysis and careful examination of the qualities it becomes evident why this novel is a masterpiece of the Romantic Movement.
Romanticism was a literary movement that swept through virtually every country of Europe, the United States, and Latin America that lasted from about 1750 to 1870. This period included philosophy, art, music, literature. Romantics believed that men and women should not be guided by rules placed on them by society but led by warm emotions that promoted a sense of freedom. William Blake was one of the poets that began the Romantic Age who promoted self-expression but was weighed down by the importance and standards of religion. (Forward, 2014) Literary work during Romanticism had a strong emphasis in implementing nature, emotion over logic, imagination over reason, and no division between art and literature. These works placed focus on human personality affected by political and social causes. These became dominant themes in romantic poetry which made literature much more complex. (Wartz "The Romantic Era" 1999)
In the 19th century, romanticism prevailed as the literary mainstream throughout the European continent. William Wordsworth (1770-1850) was one of the pioneers in the
Romanticism defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement originating in the 18th century, characterised chiefly by a reaction against neo-classicism and an emphasis on the imagination and emotions, and marked especially in English literature by sensibility and the use of autobiographical material, an exaltation of the primitive and the common man, an appreciation of external nature, an interest in the remote, a predilection for melancholy, and the use in poetry of older verse forms”. The Romanticist literary period began in the mid 1700 it was a period where a whole new chapter of writing was created. “Romanticism witnessed a steady loosening of the rules of artistic expression that were pervasive during earlier times”(Rahn). Romanticism was a completely new outlet of literature. It created many famous writers, such as Edgar Allan Poe.
William Wordsworth was born in Northwest England in 1770. He was orphaned at a young age losing his mother then his father and was sent away to school where he received a good education (Aubrey). While entering adulthood, in

The Romantic period beginning was in the end of the 18th century and the begging of the 19th century. However, this date is not accurate because we cannot say when something exactly begins and ends. Romanticism is a reaction against the neo- classical and a literary revolution movement that seeks idealism, equality and democracy in literature. I will discuss The Romantic period characteristics, Wordsworth and the rules of Romanticism and the Romantic poetry.
Wordsworth recognises in the Preface to the 1802 print of Lyrical Ballads that he and Coleridge, viewed by many as the most influential pioneers of Romantic poetry, are guilty of imbuing a “certain colouring of imagination” throughout their poetry. Indeed, Romantic poetry is often characterised by its fascination with the imagination and the idea that the mind can create a world that transcends the physical senses. In light of this concept that a new and greater world can be forged through poetry, some credence can certainly be found in Jerome McGann’s evaluation that the primary purpose of Romantic poetry is to “set one free of the ruins of history and culture”. However, McGann, in my opinion, also oversimplifies the nuances and implications found throughout Romantic poetry, and seems to dismiss it as somewhat escapist, or reliant on its displacement from reality to convey meaning; ultimately, as a “grand illusion”. Through examination of works by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, and Keats, I mean to propose, firstly, that Romantic poetry varies greatly throughout the period - meaning it frequently defies generic summation. Secondly, that Romantic poets often directly confront their historical and social contexts, and in many ways,
The poem is set in the Lake District of Wordsworth’s youth, and embodies the ideals of the Romantic Era; that nature and human intuition have a kind of knowledge not found in books and formal education. When confronted as to why he spends his time at the lake, musing and contemplating, Wordsworth replies with what was to become a memorable moment in english literature; nature nurtures the mind in a unique way, with it’s own wisdom, one which cannot be found in the pages of scholarly books. To stimulate his senses entirely, a man must just sit in the presence of nature. This was an idea found in the works of many romantic poets, who were thought to have a distrust in mankind, but found peace and knowledge in closeness with nature. Romantic poetry allowed us to see their world directly and "much of romantic poetry invited the reader to identify the protagonists with the poets themselves.”(Abrams)
William Wordsworth is a British Romanticist that is born in Cockermouth in the Lake District of England in 1770. In the year 1795 he moved with his sister Dorothy Wordsworth to Dorset in the Lake District near his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These two people in the life of William Wordsworth have played an important role in his works, particularly in the “Lucy Poems”. Wordsworth wrote a series of poems that revolves around the existence of a certain ‘Lucy’ which identity was never known or revealed by Wordsworth himself. William Wordsworth is considered as one of the “pillars that shaped early English Romantic movement. (Staroň 4)” and the most recognized romantic poems that he wrote is the Lucy poems. The Lucy poems contains five series of poems entitled “A slumber did my spirit seal”, “She dwelt among the untrodden ways”, “Strange fits of passion have I known”, “Three years she grew in sun and shower” and “I travelled among unknown men” which were arranged in a series by poem experts that studied Wordsworth poems. For this paper we would only be focusing on two poems the “She dwelt among the untrodden ways” and the “I travelled among unknown men” as we examine their themes and content.
